Hailing from Kolkata, I have always been very excited to try out any restaurant that serves my native cuisine. Not that I’m particularly fond of the Bengali cuisine, but it actually feels good to recollect the names and flavors back home once in a while. Anyway, now that I’ve been in Mumbai since years, I have tried almost all the restaurants that serve my purpose. For those who are aware, Oh Calcutta is a premium Bengali cuisine restaurant across the country. They have brought in the Bengali cuisine to the City of Dreams.
For most part of the year, I hog on anything that I find good enough to taste and of course, readily available. Not that finicky when it comes to food, you see. The day I went to this place with another Bong friend of mine, I was impressed by the nice guy at the reception who spoke with us in Bengali. It just feels good to hear your language from someone you know isn’t from your land but is still trying to please you with his efforts.
Coming to the food, for those not aware of what’s the most special in a Bengali home, go for the fish fry to start with. You may also go for the Chhana Koraishutir Chop(Cottage cheese and peas pakodas). Moving on, you can go for the Bhapa Ilish(Steamed Hilsa), Chingri Malai Curry or Doi Maach(Curd Fish). I’m sure you will like it if you’ve never tried Bengali food before. They are too different from the fish preparations we get to eat out here in Mumbai. Also, you may try the Bengali style biryani which is a little less spicy.
In the end, do not miss the exotic Bengali sweets. Although you can go for any of them, I’d suggest you to end your meal with a pot of Mishti Doi(Sweet curd) or Payesh(Kheer).
