It's been quite some time sice I've wanted a cell phone. And when you happen to be in Bangalore, two things are indispensable - a cell phone and a vehicle.

I had a friend get the Nokia 3100 for me from Dubai - it's relatively cheaper (Dhs. 710, roughly converted equals Rs. 9200) there, while here in India, you'd have to dish out Rs. 11000 plus for it.

The phone is pretty small, weighs 85 grams (including the battery), has a 4096 color display and a resolution of 128 x 128 pixels. The key layout is just about the same as all other Nokia phones, with the exception of a four-way navigational key. Around the front cover, there is a special electroluminescent glow-in-the-dark layer that shines up when it's dark.

It's also tri-band, letting you use it just about anywhere in the world, supports GPRS, and is polyphonic. It has 660 kb of memory that is shared between your games, images, ring tones and applications. Nokia has options to delete the existing applications to free up memory space for other applications.

Applications available for this phone include a multitude of java games, web viewers, conversion calculators etc. Of course, the applications are charged for by your service provider, if downloaded.

The phone uses a POP3 port for data transfer and you can use the same data cable you use for the Nokia 3200, 6100, 6610, 7210 and the 6230. Since the phone supports GPRS and if your service provider supports it too, you can browse the net and download ring tones and wallpapers. You can also specify a color scheme for the phone, to match your wallpaper.

The phone also allows you to attatch a picture to a contact stored in the phone. Whenever the contact calls up, his picture flashes along with the contact 'calling' sign.

It also uses a slimmer black-colored battery called the BL-5C, rather than the conventional white BL-D3 battery. The Nokia 3100 I have has a silver white cover, rather than the blue one they have as standard here in India.

The phones a pretty good buy and well worth it's price here or anywhere, for that matter. A sleek, small companion that manages to attract loads of attentions.
