The high water mark of the past few days has to be my new found obsession with nirvana. It was not until recently that the video of 'Smells like teen spirit' caught my eye and I plunged into this new world of sonic resonance. Since then I have been listening to so much of their music and reading so much about them that my sister is convinced that I am going through some sort of bizarre identity crisis phase (don't ask!).

I came across the albums chart and I was really stunned to see that Nevermind- nirvana's second album was still among the top 40 selling albums on the list. I realized that there may be another Audio slave, Britney Spears or Maroon5 but Nirvana reign supreme!

Here is the lowdown on their larger than life rock career Kurt Cobain(1967-1994) the lead singer of Nirvana , born Kurt Donald Cobain on February 20, 1967, in Hoquiam, Washington, lead a 'less than perfect' life like most of us.

His band also consisting of Dave Grohl, and Chris Novoselicwas one of the major exponents of grunge, the Seattle-based style of rock music that became successful worldwide in the early 1990's during the decaying punk and mellow Michael Jackson and Van Halen(hope I spelt that right) music scene.

The first major recognition of Nirvana's abilities was the success of the band's second album, Nevermind, in 1991 which was produced along with Butch Vig (who is the current band-member of Garbage with Shirley Manson). This was followed by a single, Smells Like Teen Spirit, that latter became an anthem for millions of young people who felt alienated by worsening career prospects and the increasing power of multinational corporations. Thus they single handedly launched a new genre of music.

Millions of teenagers especially in the 'Still trying to find my own identity' phase of their life struck a chord with Nirvana's distorted guitar and rasping https://lyrics. This album guaranteed them world-wide success. But fame only magnified the lead singer Kurt Cobain's insecurities.

He went on to marry Courtney Love, singer-songwriter with the grunge band Hole in 1992. Their daughter, Frances Bean Cobain, was born in the same year. Constant media attention led to revelations of drug-taking. This feeling of malaise intensified in his later songs, particularly on the 1993 album, In Utero.

On April 8, 1994, Cobain's body was discovered at his Seattle home. He had APPARENTLY committed suicide by shooting himself in the head (I also read that he had taken 1.54 mgs of cocaine - 3 times the normal dose, a very high content, even for a drug addict).

I read somewhere that Kurt Cobain's suicide seemed to symbolize the uncertainty of his generation. With all due respect to the people who wrote that, I disagree. I feel that so many people find solace in his songs because the subjects of a fractured family environment or of melancholy because every time they hear it, they can feel his incredible persona resonate around them. And no matter what people may say, he wasn't just a 'flash in the pan' drug-abused rock star.

I might not know what the lines 'Bruises on the fruit, Tender age in bloom' mean, but I do know that He was most certainly the pin-up boy for this generation of insecure teens and arguably the greatest singer/songwriter of the music history yet. I know he's got my vote.

Rock On!
