It was my friend Vineet?s last night in Pune who was visiting from Gwalior and he wanted to go to a disco. I myself being fairly new to Pune, I had no idea where to go. Somebody told us about this disco right next door to Inox multiplex, called Nirvana. I liked the name and we took a chance. It was a Monday night when most of the disc?s in Pune are closed but Nirvana was open.
Later I enquired and found that Nirvana is open 7 days a week and is closed only in case of a dry day. So far so good.
There is an entry fee of Rs. 300 per couple but that?s the cover charge meaning that you get coupons worth Rs. 300 which you can use to buy drinks inside. We were an odd group of 5 - 3 guys, 2 girls (can you believe I didn?t have a date! L ), so our entry was like 3 couples, Rs. 900.
[As an aside, stag entry is allowed, Rs. 200 per guy, and that?s not a cover charge. You buy your own drinks.]
Inside, the floor was fairly good-sized and there were some seating places around the walls, couches and such. We took our seats and ordered drinks. I had a Vodka with 7 up and Vineet took RC, others took only juice or cold drink. Overall, the price and quality of drinks was okay. My Vodka was Rs. 150 per drink I don?t know about the other drinks (No, I didn?t get drunk enough to forget J!).
Music started about 10:30 PM and it took about 15-20 minutes for the crowd to warm up and get on the floor. The attending crowd was mostly from college student age-group but working class was also fairly represented. Dress code you can readily imagine given the warm climate conditions and liberal culture of Pune.
Ambiance of the place was great and people were friendly. The whole theme of the moment was to have fun and forget everything else. Being there you would not believe it was a week night!
On the dance floor, you are not expected to perform any choreographical wonders in a disco and most of the people were average dancers/movers.
The DJ skill was above average and the selection of songs was good enough to keep the masses happy and excited. Well, I am not a dancer but I can?t just keep sitting when they play songs like ?Sajna ve sajna? from Chameli. Another popular number was title song of Dhoom, the Tata Young version. Bryan Adams? ?Summer of 69? was also a big hit with the crowd. Well, you can follow the trend from here.
We left there at 0130, which was about half an hour earlier than the closing time. All in all, it was quite a fun night and Nirvana gets a clear thumbs up from me.
