Some are loving it, some are saying its great so just to see what the brouhaha is all about and also because I just happen to love off beat cinema, I ventured to watch mithya. Must say that though the basic premise might be ripped off from don, this movie is different.
Its difficult to slot into any genre but most appropriate might be "dark comedy" It has doses of suspense, drama and romance too but all to be taken with a pinch of salt. Its boring in parts but on the whole keeps you engaged since its slow but short.
It starts off with Ranvir playing VK, an aspiring bollywood actor(more of an extra) struggling to make a name for himself. He is a smart alec thats evident through his dialogues and his basic approach to life. He just happens to a splitting image of an underworld don and the don's rival abducts VK, kills the don and plants the humshakal in his place. So far so good but then the farce takes over and the proceedings get unreal and more of a theatre presentation than a strong screenplay / narrative.
Its decent because theres a fine director behind us ..who has given usĀ some genuinely unique films like raghu romeo, mixed dubles but the panache is lacking somewhere on this ride. Ranvir is excellent. Hes a chameleon of an actor and changes expressions with amazing lucidity. I mainly watched this flick for his acting prowess and he carries the film on his shoulders. But hes let down by an unconvincing screenplay thats neither comedy nor sarcasm nor action nor drama.
Neha is bearable as she tries her hand at comedy. Naseer and Vinay Pathak have good screentime but are reduced to buffoonery in the final cut of this movie. Maybe the initial intentions was to make it something special but somewhere in the execution the pace slags and the movie is reduced to a "has been"
OK for a one time watch on dvd/tv for Ranvir's acting.
