Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi Hai can perhaps be termed as one of the most awaited films of 2002. The two most-obvious reasons for the same can be put as…

1) It’s a Yash Chopra offering…a banner that has never defied audience’ expectations and 2) It stars two of the most talented youngsters Uday Chopra and Jimmy Shergill from Narayan Shankar’s Gurukul of Mohabbatein fame.

The film is director by Sanjay Gadhvi, a one-time assistant to Anant Balani. Gadhvi had previously assisted Balani in successful hits like Patthar Ke Phool and Jazbaat. He turned independent with Tere Liye, a small budget caper that released some time back, but failed to make its mark on the box office. Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi Hai is his subsequent directorial venture.

Inspired by the Hollywood blockbuster My Best Friend's Wedding (1997) starring Julia Roberts, Cameron Diaz and Dermot Mulroney, Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi Hai seems to be yet another love triangle set to lure the audience.

Sanjay (Uday Chopra) is a peripatetic Casanova who has been in and out of several relationships, but has never seen the daylight of true love. Presently, Sanjay is sharing a live-in relationship with Ria (Bipasha Basu), a model. Both of them share the same apartment and the same mutual love for each other. However, their sweet life is soon shattered when Ria ditches Sanjay after one week of adventurous trivia. That’s when Sanjay realizes how miserable a life is his. But before he can churn out some dare devil action out of his newfound enlightenment, he receives a phone call. It happens to be from Anjali (Sanjana), Sanjay’s old time good friend.

Anjali is getting married in Dehradun and has called up Sanjay to invite him for the same. They have a neat conversation that travels thru’ a montage of nostalgia. Incidentally, Ria seems to have overheard the conversation and comes to the conclusion that Sanjay is madly in love with Anjali. After initial denials, Ria manages to convince our man of good fortune that it’s not too late and that Sanjay and Anjali can still unite.

That’s it. Sanjay packs his bags and makes a sprinted dash to Dehradun to seek the intrinsic favours of his longtime sweetheart. Anjali and Sanjay meet up and begin to have a good time together before the real trouble begins.

Enter Rohit (Jimmy Shergill), Anjali’s NRI fiancée from the uptown New York City. Anjali had bumped into Rohit at New York and since then, their splendid love story has thrived. As time passes, Sanjay realizes that Rohit is the gem of a person. Rohit is elegant, good-looking, sincere, and possesses all the traits that are requisite to be a loving and caring husband. But our man is undeterred by these charismatic charms.

Sanjay cannot imagine a life without Anjali and decides to incapacitate Rohit’s image in the family. Following this resolution like a thirsty gullet in a sultry desert, Sanjay begins to play silly pranks on Rohit. Even after trying several tricks in the art, Rohit manages to maintain his dignity and Anjali’s love for him. It dawns upon Sanjay that the cold war must be declared open. Simultaneously, Rohit realizes that it is indeed Sanjay who is responsible for the recent upheavals in his life. The war is now in the battlefield. Rohit directly confronts Sanjay demands an explanation.

After a not-so-gruesome clash, the duo decides to give each other a fair chance in seeking the love of their lives. Conclusion: Let Anjali pass the penultimate verdict. Hereafter, a customary nerve-breaking Yash Chopra climax lies in store.
