This enchanted story is about a girl who is taken from her home in Yoroido and who is stripped of her family. Sayuri as she is known at the end of the book goes through many good and bad things through her journey of becoming a well-known Geisha in Japan. She leads a life of triumph, intimacy and desire. This novel is set in the early 1900’s and some of the book is set during WW2.
All the characters in this book are well rounded. Sayuri’s character is reasonably in depth and Golden presents the reader a very alive rich, colourful and impressive character. This book conveys a part of the Japanese culture and also a bit of its history, which is quite nice to be aware and learn about.
Arthur Golden has an absolute flair for writing. This book is one of the best I’ve ever read. His writing style is startling. He makes you understand things by taking objects from nature and putting them in a personified context. This book is so captivating. Arthur Golden is a very talented man.
Memoirs of a Geisha is a mesmerizing and absorbing novel. I recommend it highly to anyone who loves reading. This novel takes you on a tremendous journey through a remarkably astonishing story.
