The Suzuki 800, a car that changed the whole face or should I say experience of what a modern car should be. I still recall the days when this car was launched.
It never had anywhere the space of an Ambassador or Fiat 1100 but it started to sell & sell well. We never knew that a car could be this efficient & practical. Its only additional feature was Air Conditioning in the Deluxe variant.
You could get a Fiat or Ambassador retro fitted with an Air conditioner but it felt crude. The engine of the 800 was & still is a gem. Its gone through several upgrades and the best was the series that came with a 5 speed gearbox.
Its sad that this model is no longer sold but then I guess Suzuki realized that this model could eat into the sales of the Alto which is pretty much an 800 with a different body shell.
We never had a car delivered to us with bucket seats, seat belts, fabric upholstery, a modern dashboard & fuel gauges that were accurate and easy to read. All this and more was something totally new & fresh in terms of ideas.
