I recently got a chance to drive Mahindra Scorpio in an off-road rally and would say the experience was not very good. I have been driving SUVs for approximately 3-4 years and expected a lot from the Scorpio.
The car has got good looks and you will be impressed by them. But the real thing about an SUV is its performance off-road and this is where Scorpio fails to nail it. On loose tracks, the control is not very good and you feel disconnected with the track many times.
It gets extremely uncomfortable when the car travels over bumps. Power delivery is good but then pick-up is again not encouraging. The engine noise is high but for a diesel engine of that capacity I do not blame the company much.
Interiors are of fine quality and center console is well designed. Various storage places add to the convenience of the occupants. The AC works fine and cools the car in reasonably less time. Sitting in the second row is quite comfortable as there is decent space. It's of great value to you if you travel with family often. But then third row is disappointing and you have to struggle to find good space for yourself.
If you are planning to buy an SUV and do off-roading often, check Tata Safari as well. Taking a test drive is a mandatory thing for me before buying a car and I suggest you to do it as well. Maintenance can also be a problem so enquire about it in detail as well. It has got good features and space which are important for a family.
