Maggie Noodles..I missed you. Its been over 3 years that I am away from home, working in Dammam, Saudi Arabia. Its been over 3 years now, that I haven't had a bite off your swirly-curly tentacles. While I have tasted other versions of noodles, mostly asian, imported from the Philippines or Indonesia, I have missed you. Oh, so dearly! I missed you the exact way I missed good ol' paani-puri that I used to have from the bhaiyaa on Khau-gali at Ghatkopar station-east. I didn't reminisce the tune of how the adds were made or what the words were said, but all my memory bought back was that hunger-demolishing feeling, when I used to get back from college in the final year of my graduation. How, you used to take the hunger away, when mum used to get it ready right before I walked in the door. I tried the chicken flavor but, errr.it sux! You can improve it, but, I don't think you want to. Anywho, the veg flavor used to work for me, 'coz mum used to improvise by adding cubes of diced chicken or some fried egg or boiled egg and get me back on the hunger station asking for more. Oh, those were the days.
But, here in Dammam, Maggie is far from distant. Everybody knows maggie but no one can get their hands on it. I happened to meet a friend, a few months back. He needed a favor from me and had asked me to help him out. Long story short, he was able to go on his annual leave a month ago. Now, while we were talking and sharing some memories of our days in college(we were no where related or friends back then), we shared the same interest in food. I recalled the chat-pata food indulgence when I was in India, and how maggie played an important role in those late night and long hours of study. It was an exhilarating blast-from-the-past conversation we shared. So, when in the process of this, he interrupted me when I was talking about paani-puri(which was so rude), and asked me if he could get me a packet of maggie? I was kinda shy and hesitating, and didn't want to trouble him, so I refused saying, its ok. Don't trouble yourself for me. He kept on insisting, just once, after which I gave in and told him that he could get it. And voila, today I got around 10 packets delivered to me.
And now I can eat!
