Do we really have to think about watching a movie that casts Irrfan Khan as its lead?! That was a rhetorical question, but still read the review to know more about this question. Director Nishikant Kamat is back with a thriller that is based on true story and somewhere this makes me, being a real event involving a certain Home Minister, the story has been mellowed down(that’s what I think).

The name of movie is Madaari, which means a street performer that uses dumbroo to make a sidekick dance to the beats of it. But what happens when the sidekick gains the dumbroo and the performer is made to dance to its tune. This is the background story of the movie. Our’s country of 125 crore people are run by powerful people who call the shots, we suffer but no one can answer or do anything about it.

Well, this story is about Nirmal Kumar(Irrfan) who lives a very satisfying life with his wife and son. But when this commoner loses his son, all hell breaks loose for him. He runs from pillar to post to find his son but nothing works for him. He approaches police and even the Home Minister, but everyone turns a blind eye to his plight. A frustrated common man who is looking for trace of his son turns into a kidnapper. Nirmal Kumar kidnaps Home Minister’s son so that he could feel the lurch in pit of his stomach when he loses his own son.

How the chase begins.Does Nirmal get his son back? Or he gets caught up in the web of powerful icons? This makes for the rest of the story.

As this is based on true story, the film holds you captivated for more to see and know. The script is gloomy and doesn’t pick up its pace a while before interval and jogs through the second half till climax. The music always and always plays an intriguing part in making any scene more interesting and accentuates the thrill. For this Vishal Bhardwaj and Sunny Inder-Bawra take a bow, because the music totally lifted the emotion.

Let’s getting talking about performances, Irfan Khan with his cheesy lines and threats does a marvellous job(had no doubts in that). Jimmy Shergill as Nachiket Verma who is hot on trails of Nirmal, does justice to his character. Only these two characters have kept the movie and watchers glued to their seats. The chasing and interrogations, whenever they talk and come face-to-face, is damn high.

Being two movies released this Friday; Madaari and Kabali, the weekend is going to get thrillingly interesting. Madaari is a low-budget movie, not like signature movies that released last month. So there are no item songs or elaborated fighting scenes, but yes, the movie is captivating.

If you are like me, who would give a thriller more credit than a super-star movie, then this movie is your weekend goal. Watch it for their performances and also react to how our country is going on working with powerful dummies.
