Being my place of birth. I am excited to review my own city. First of all thanks to mouthshut for giving such option to locals as well as others to share about their city.
Kolkata previously know as Calcutta got its name 300 years back by Job Charnock. While exploring this unknown city Sir Job Charnock came by a paddy field where he saw some farmers cutting rice plants. In eagerness to knoe thw name of the place he went and asked one of the farmer Whats the name of this place . The farmer having no education was not able to understand the question henve Job made gestures and asked again, his gestures made the farmer umderstood as if he was asking of when did the farmer cut tje crops. The farmer replied in Bengali kal katta meaning the crops were cut yesterday but being a british Job was not able to interpret rather je took it that the farmer is saying tje name of the plave hence kal katta became Calcutta.
Later it was Calcutta which was made the British capital of India.
Today Kolkata is known as city of joy, the living standard is very less costly as well as the travelling and dwelling expenses. Even today one can have belly full rice with 2 different curry and dal for just Rs 30 to Rs 50. A cup of tea would cost only Re 1 or max Rs 3. On the other hand you would find all kind of malls, cineplex, eateries, hotels and travel modes. From one extreme corner of kolkata to another would round up in a max of 50km less not more and it takes only Rs 5 for a metro travel till today.
Still Kolkata is one of the highly populated and most diversed and secular metropolitian city. It is the pride of our state WB.
