I have been to Calcutta now renamed as Kolkata on as many as 3 occassions. To be honest each time I have discovered a newer dimension of the city. Like any other metro city, this city too is teeming with people & traffic.This city has a lot to offer for sightseeing. The famous hooghly bridge, metro railway, Writer's Building, the magnificent Eden Gardens cricket stadium (if u r a cricket buff)
This city has a unique combination of the old & the new with the trams & rickshaws jostling with swanky Hondas & Mitsubishis. It offers a wide range of eating joints from the roadside dhabas & thelewallas to midbudget restaurants & five star hotels. The food available includes the normal stuff roti,daal,rice & the exotic rosogullas,mishtidoi & wide range of fish dishes.
However, the city is very dirty with the roads overflowing with people & beggars and to add to the commotion is the severe traffic jams, beggars & the stray animals.
On a more serious note the problem of cross border infiltration from Bangladesh is assuming dangerous proportions with the number of illegle migrants increasing by the day.
The so called City of Joy is loosing its charm & unless the govenmnet & the general KOlkata resident realises the grave problems faced by Kolkata I am afraid it will soon become a City of Despair
