I would like to say Kolangal is one of the good family dramas that provides episodes that meet the expectations of MAJORITY of the viewers. Its is obvious that its very hard to meet the requirements ALL viewers. To my knowledge, mostly, every one is playing the role excellently to make Kolangal an outstanding drama, at this time of the story. The story goes well, except for some ''black holes'' at the beginning and now here and there. (See details at the end of this)
Its is not important to note where this drama stands as of today, but its important to wait and see the direction in which it goes till the end, and also at the end; thats when most story writers and directors upset the TV serials ...like it happened in ''ANNI'' for example. Its easy to make the drama catchy and exciting at the beginning or now in the middle, but very extremely difficult to seek a very attractive end to make majority of the viewers happy. So Mr.THIRUCHELVAM, its a challenge to your profession I would say! Let us wait and see how you end your drama?
Kolankal drama is centered on TRUE FRIENDs' LOVE and it also reminds you the saying, throughout the drama that ... ''One person's weakness is another person's strength''. ''NEE UNNAI ARINTHAAL ULAGATHIL PORADALARM....'' as sung by MGR. Yes, if you know your weakness and strengths you would know to escape from nasty exploiters.Those who know it will apply that strategy to win their objectives.
So, Abi's first weakness is her inability to identify and isolate at the outset, the people whom to trust and believe. This weakness is rightly exploited to the best by the thug SivaDas. Her second weakness is over-providing respect to in-laws and her husband. So she was kicked out from there. Her third weakness is providing first place to LOVE than to money. Love within her family, then with her best friend Usha and finally with ex-father-in -law; she got glewed to Narayan who replaced in her the father's image. (Narayan acts very well, I saw his otherside in ANNI, Super!)
On the other side of the coin, Kanchana exploits Easwarn's weakness - he married twice, so he has to maintain a lower profile with Kanchana. Narayan being jobless is a weakness that Alaimelu exploits & treat him like a dirt. Arthithya's mother-loving weakness is exploited by Kanchana effecting his wedded life. Arthy also exploits her husband's weakness resulted from pretending as a rich man. So he bends down to Arthy. Kala exploits Arthy's weakness that she is not able to be a good daughter in law to satisfy everyone in the in-law's house. Kala's sister exploited Arthy's husband's weakness for sex.
Minister and Rekha exploit Kanchana's and Arthithya's weaknesses since Kanchana is crazy for mingling with higher ranked people in scoiety while Arthithya's is the anger against Usha. Abi's sithappa's weakness is to expand business in singapore, so the criminal son-in-law exploited him to his best. The people in Anthra has weakness to buy cheap colour TV, etc, so Abi's sithappa uses his son and partners to extract Anthra people's money.
By the way....Our weakness is also that we are crazy to watch TV serials that bring day-to-day ''family events'' so the TV serial directors exploit our weakness by providing a few thrilling ''GOOD MASALA'' here and there at the start, and in the middle of the story. But who knows how it would end up eventually.
However, Kolangal drama provides lots of courage and motivation for many young women viewers, through Abinaya's LEGENDARY CINEMA level acting; she stands boldly to face the world when always everything goes naturally setup against her expectations.Her self-confidence and continued efforts put together bring her success. Abi also bears the beam of responsibilities at home as head of the family a bread winner, and as President at the office that she owns, and hence naturally crying would be her first reaction, in her whole life, that too without a husband after a divorce. She acts with her facial expressions like Sivaji. Thats great!
Her ex-husband Baskar, a stupid over-night wealth seeker, with a concept that men are to dominate the women, could not resonate to Abi's frequency, so lost Abi, and found her good attributes only while nearing the doors to his death.
Abi exhibits an example of how a typical eldest child must take responsibility of the siblings & single parent in the absence of a regular bread winner,a wonderful family-centered sister. She is a RARE GEM. She neither gives her heart easily to even the CRAZY psycho doctor, NOR she thinks of another marriage with a view of ''Marriage is once'' in her life; this is her firm concept in her current path of life, until now, which may perhaps be due to the family burden which stands as number one for her.
Marvellous, I feel when Abi's father is in such pains, when he is tortured by events resulting from his double marriage. Also its painful to watch the drama when Abi or Anandy or her brother tells their sufferings faced in the absence of their father, to Easwaran himself without knowing that he is the real father.
Arthy's role depicts a confused mind and heart; she never wanted to elope, but she thought the rich boy friend will solve partly her poverty at home but ended in getting cheated. Here the story tells us, how in such situations, our MIND and HEART operate oppositely for us. Yes! Arthy HATES him with her MIND for his misconduct, while deeply LOVE him with her HEART. She choicelessly save the life of the victim girl, by getting her married to her husband. At the outset, it looks foolish, but with her husband she did not want to be ''a dog in the manger'. mmm Arthy is another RARE BREED of course....! Wait Kanchana is on the other extreme end!!
Now Usha is right, and cool as a cucumber as she achieved what she urgently & mainly wanted - a real biological father's name to provide for her child. However, deep inside her heart if you dig, you would see a beautiful Arthithya laying alife. However Arthithya's ego, and Abi's friendly love screened and shadowed over Usha's love towards Arthithya. Quite natural! again another example for HEART and MIND working here too, oppositely.
Usha loves him deeply with her HEART but hates with her MIND. She unleashed him as far as he could go, since Arthithya is now beyond repair. Wait and see Usha would get her time. Usha would need to gain momentum soon after her baby is born, I guess, thats when the relay button changes hands and switch in to hers. WoW.... See how she would command Kanchana and Arthithya very soon...! you guys will be surprising! Its the first grand son in that family thats going to bring lot of changes, and Usha takes the upper hand in that house
Alaimelu is a typical role which, no doubt, every family circle would have one, to represent her and annoy many of us, in our real life. Of course Aleimelu with SEIVINAI and SOONIYAM is also ''beyond repair'', however, found a good companion to blow air to her fire that she sets on Abi's family.There is none, I am sure, who does not feel like slapping Aleimelu (Nalini) in every episode that she comes.
I would also appluade for Katpagam on her excellent performance as a mother. Every bit of her acting is perfect match to a mother's role wanted in this story. She has to be crying crying and crying, whatelse to do?...thats her life made up of, without a husband, and to single handedly raise three girls upto now.
Ananady is a gifted actress. Arthithya shouts a bit too much at times, however it refelcts the way he was raised. He would change sooner with a Rekha's treat.
The drama got severely side tracted initially with Aleimelu's son-in-law and eldest daughter, then THOL's house lady and her love, again by the mad lover of anandy and then thug SivaDAS.These are like ''black holes'' took away unwarrantedly our time.
