A Classic. Review on Kireedam - Malayalam Movie

Hey I saw this movie more than 10 years back and now if I feel Like writing about it then imagine the kind of impression it has left in my mind. This is not just one of the actor Mohanlal's best but also one of the best movies ever made as far as characterisation goes.The lead character Sethumadhavan played by Mohanlal, the honest cop cum father role by Thilakan, the local bigmouth goonda played by Haneefa, the short but sweet role of Sethumatdhavan's sweetheart played by Parvathi, the villain role of Keerikdan Jose are still etched in the memory of all who saw the film.

Even now people will have a lump in their throat thinking about how Sethumadhavan's dreams and aspirations get crushed one by one. Might be people were able to see themselves in Sethumadhavn's shoes and realising that their dreams are being cut halfway through, left them with a sense of helplessness and pitiness, which in turn got translated into love for the character and the movie on the whole.

Sibilmalayil directed this movie and the script was done by

Lohitadas. The film was produced by Unni and thereafter he was known as ''Kireedam'' Unni !!! The music is by Johnson-Kaithapram and the song ''Kanneer poovinte kavulil'' was a gem worth listening again and again. It was sung by M.G Sreekumar and he won quite a few awards including the State Award for that.

The story starts in a small town in Kerala where Mohanlal is the elder son of an honest Police constable(thankfully hez not the Asst. Commisioner). His dad wants to groom him into a Sub-Inspector. He even attends the exam for that and also his marriage is arranged with Parvathi, his uncle's daughter who lives next door. Things go on as planned, till the day our honest dad slaps a politician's son after he fringes a traffic law.

Hez transfered to another town which is ruled by a set of goons. There he gets into a fight with one of the goons whose head is Keerikadan Jose and son comes to his rescue. There starts the trouble and Sethumadhavan gets entagled into a web of problems. Unwittingly hez sucked into the world of goondaism with local goons like Hydrose(Haneefa) who were without a leader for them, gleefully pulling Sethu into world of theirs. Sethumadhavan is kicked out of the house and and how his life takes a complete U turn and how he loses everything he wanted in life and gets everything he did not need forms the rest. The emotional scenes after that when hez arrested by his own father , how his mother asks him to get out when really not wanting to do that, the day when Sethu witnesses his girl

getting married with someone else are all still etched in memory.

The film was such a huge success as well as critically acclaimed that

two more sequels were made with the same cast. Mohanlal got a

National special jury award for his sensitive portrayal of Sethumadhavan,

a character which will remain in the memory of many a cinemagoer for years.
