There are many water purifiers available in the market. I personally don't trust the cheap ones because most of these technologies don't provide full proof solution. These low cost water purifiers will either not remove harmful chemical particles or it will not kill the germs, bacteria and viruses etc.

Best two companies that make good water purifiers in India are Kent and Aqua-Guard. They produce different models using either or both RO and UV technology. There are few other filters that are used in these purifiers. Carbon filter and sedimentation filters are two most commonly used filters. An Iron filter may also be fixed externally by paying some extra amount.

RO stands fro reverse osmosis. This is a very nice and proven technology than can remove extra mineral contents from the water. This technology is so good that it can change the taste of the water from poor to excellent. RO is most useful if water that you are using has too much iron or other mineral contents making the water taste bad.

UV technology uses ultra violet(UV) lamp to kill bacteria, germs and other living nano particles. This technique is also called e-boiling by many people. However, please note the fact that UV ray doesn't provide you the safety that boiled water can give. However, UV rays provides some decent degree of protection.

Aqua-guard UV water purifier models are good and can be used if your water taste is already good. UV models come with some inbuilt filters that need to be changed periodically depending on quality of water. Support services are reasonably good but make sure that you have the service center numbers.

If you want to choose a complete water purification system that will keep you healthy then you must choose Kent mineral RO. This system has inbuilt carbon and sedimentation filters. The RO removes most particles from water whereas UV ray kills all bacteria and germs. It comes with an automatic fault detection system that raises an alerm in case of a problem. Mineral content in the water is regulated using a screw driver by the installation/service technician. This regulation is required to ensure that you have minimum required quantity of mineral in the water. The system requires AC power supply for operation. It consumes negligible power if used for regular domestic use. Water is stored in a small tank attached to the system so that you can get water even during power cut. There is an easy to operate tap that you get the water from. The system creates very light noise when it operates. Cleaning the tank is quite easy. You just need to open a bottom outlet. When it operates then there will be some water wastage as this is how RO systems work. Please don't worry about the water wastage. If you are too concerned the I suggest you to use the waste water for car wash or gardening.

This system costs around Rs. 13, 500-14, 500.(May 2009). This system is expensive and suitable for those who live on mineral water. Also, this system is suitable for anyone who suffers from chronic stomach problems or any other water borne diseases. This system turns any dirty looking distasteful water into healthy drinking water.

Maintenance cost of the system is quite high because you need to replace filters every year. Two filters will cost you Rs. 700. Technician charges will be Rs. 250 per visit. Also, it is required to change the RO unit every 2-3 years depending on quality of water. RO unit cost is Rs. 2500.

Kent provide decent support. However, it's not excellent as company has no direct service center. Even then I can say that you can expect good support from them. Please make sure that you take service related phone numbers otherwise you may find it difficult to call an engineer.

Kent mineral RO won best complete water purifier solution multiple times. Most people consider it as good but an expensive system. Please read below to find if this is expenssive.

I shall give you an easy calculation for you to decide. Assume that the System cost is Rs. 14000. Considering that the system can be used for 10 years you would spend additional Rs. 7500(3 x Rs. 2500) for RO unit replacement. Also, you would spend Rs. 1000 per year for filter replacement and servicing charges for nine years(1 year warranty). Hence toral expences for 10 years of operation will be Rs. 14000+ Rs. 7500+ Rs. 9000= Rs. 31500.

The calculation shows that you would spend Rs. 3150 per year or Rs. 262 per months if you use RO+UV system for 10 years. If you are spending more money than this amount for driking water then you should consider buying it. Also, you should consider that you would get more qualtity of purified water per month by paying Rs 262 than buying water using the same amount.
