I visited Kaya Clinic in Kandivali Mumbai in Jan 2013. My problem is that due to high exposure to Sunrays over a few years, my facial skin color has gone dark and I have two dark patches on my temples due to hyper pigmentation. Infact on one side of the temple my skin has become thick. I was told by a skin doctor that this was due to high Melanin production and Glycolic peels could be the first curative option.

The doctor at Kaya after examining my skin said that Glycolic peels would have a limited impact and that I should choose the more aggressive TCA peel. She assessed that by going for 6 sitting the pigmentation would reduce by 50% for sure and can benefit by about 75% in some cases. She was very confident on the benefit of the peelings and based on that confidence I decided to go ahead with the same. She said that I will start to see the difference immediately and after the 3rd peel the pigmentation would reduce significantly.

I signed up for 6 sittings which were to administered with a gap of at least 15 days between two sittings. I was told that the skin would peel for upto 3 to 7 days after the application of the peel.

The process is that they apply the TCA peel on the face for around 5 minutes and then neutralize it. After this the peeling starts the next day and the upper layer of the skin gets peeled off. This process of peeling takes about 3 to 7 days time.

The first sitting went off well and there was a considerable amount of peeling. The result was positive and I saw that the skin color was lighter and the pigmented patches were also slightly lighter.

This is the end of the good part. After the second session there has been no improvement in the skin condition at all. Infact when I went for the 3rd session the doctor could not stop herself from commenting that my face looked tanned than earlier. The 4th session was no better. The guy who was applying the peel told me that probably they may increase the concentration of the peel but when asked the doctor said that the concentration remained the same and it was just that they may decide to let the peel stay on the skin for a longer time before they neutralize it. The 4th session also did not produce any difference.

Now the people there started saying that I would notice a difference after the 5th application. I started becoming uncomfortable on hearing these moving targets.

Recently I got the 5th session done. In my opinion this was the worst of them all. They did not have the fan for cooling the face and the assistance had to use a cardboard for fanning my face to keep it cool during the application. The peeling is almost zero and the impact of the session is for sure zero.

On my last visit the receptionist mentioned that though the hyper pigmented patches have not improved but the color of the skin on my forehead has lightened. I guess as desperation. I had to remind her that I was there to improve the pigmentation of the temples.

I still have a sixth session to go but am unsure if I want to put in the time and the energy into going for it as the results are not there and there is a possibility that it may produce some negative result.

My assessment is that the doctor did a superficial examination of my skin at the beginning and therefore suggested some random treatment. They wanted to desperately get the customer and the sales pitch took precedence over giving the right solution to the customer. Infact they should have reassessed the situation after the 3rd session and should have either aborted the treatment or should have taken a course correction. The fact that they chose to continue with the same treatment in hope of producing miracles or in the hope of continuing to make more money out of a sucker speaks badly on the professionalism and training of Kaya.

The fact that I did not push it also speaks the fact that I pushed myself to follow the course in hope that it would succeed. The fact that the Kaya clinic does not have a scientific process of measuring the skin quality, skin tone etc itself is  a surprise. Am not sure on what basis will they measure the benefit of the treatment that they have recommended.

I must mention that the staff there has always been very polite and pleasing.

Overall I feel that I have been taken for a ride by Kaya and would NOT recommend anyone to go for a TCA peel treatment at Kaya.
