Hurray 150 :D

KANK is kanky and needs no hankyas Emotions are plastic stretched like an elastic

First half is almost breezy but second half is cheezy,

Kjo calls it Path Breaking, I call it Back breaking

That was the short preview, now follows the long review ;)

We all are open to ideas, aren't we? Well at least I am. KANK or Kabhi whatever Kehna was promised to be a film unlike of Kjo, and he promised of lacing the movie with more mature treatment and decent handling of the subject in sharp contrast to his bubble gum candy floss families and relationships.

After 22 reels, I was left with more questions than answers to already raised questions. I never look for logic, as who cares as far as I am entertained but and that’s a big BUT, where did this extra marital setup take us! I guess after 3 hrs and 20 minutes, the movie meandered and meandered for reasons only known to KJo and his promoters who are calling it his best work.

As I said I am open to ideas toh I was in a way pleased to see ongoing in KANK, SRK's negative outburst and his reasons for being so plus also his conversations with Preity that the marriage isn't going that smoothly. The biggest mishap comes in the way in the first scene itself, when Rani and SRK meet and Rani talks about "Shaadi ke baad ki mohabbat". The problem is not the scene. Actually it’s more of an ambiguous dialogue delivery that sends audience to the thought that Rani is already affair prone or more infidible (Thats my word :P). As I said, who cares for logic and as long as it kept me entertained, I was up for it.

First half is as I said more of Johar cinema that he has dished out in his 2 earlier directorial ventures. Black beast thing, its ok but gave me few laughs. Amitabh and his stints as sexy sam plus others. The problem with subjects like this is when a director like Johar undertakes it, the dynamics of the subject and the treatment just don't go hand in hand. Like watch Arth or Silsila for a more subtle treatment from both Mahesh Bhatt and Yash Chopra. But KANK is grandeur and that is where the biggest mistake lies. You are awed by the settings, the stars that your desire to be entertained more but KANK turns here and its like watching a tele serial subject on a big screen and with elaborateness of 45 crore behind it.

You will feel good about that factor only till the first half and scenes of Amitabh with Kirron Kher, Abhishek. In fact, in most scenes and of course SRK and Preity interaction is somewhat worth watching. 2nd half gets emotional as expected but it’s the philosophy that falls flat on its face. THUD! That was it sounded like.

You have a numb and cold wife like Rani, who doesn’t feel anything for Abhishek. And still agrees to SRK to try her sexy penthouse stint with Abhi for saving her marriage, when throughout the movie we are made to believe that it was her who wants nothing but just discussions.

SRK's negative outbursts just go overboard with his kid for oblivious reasons. Then it follows with the biggest blunder from the story point of view i.e. SRK and Rani getting together and ditching Preity and Abhi and in fact the logic made more sense had it been other way round.

Well since I didn’t write it, hence I will criticize WriterShibani Bhatija for the same to nullify any emotional impact whatsoever after this. Its not that movie doesn’t have its moments and in fact I even give Karan credit to have it in KANK unlike his other films. But when the story is a total give away on the main points, then anything else is like beating around the bush and that is what happens in KANK, the 2nd half is like round round and round and then square flat.

SRK comments that Rani is not sexy and that’s why Abhi might not like him. But it is shown that Abhi loves and has head over heels fallen for her. Then we have Preity's character who is a workaholic, asking her colleagues to ignore her husbands and do more late nights for her magazine to be No.1. And then a complete turnaround when her magazine gets to no.1, sheer stupidity as its a known fate that to sustain no.1 spot has more worth then getting there.

Music is I guess high point with tracks picturized well as we expect from KJo and hence Anil Mehta and Farah Khandeserve their share of credit for Cinematography and Choreography. Jjust one glitch in the song "Mitwa", where SRK takes the mic and sings like a lunatic to an Alaap, which was completely out of sync. So SEL do a decent job.

The other problem with so called path breaking attempt is cliché character of Amitabh, who serves as a source of comedy throughout the first half but then he is made to be a part of the story with some serious underlines and considering the brevity of negatives in SRK, I was wondering why did SRK and Rani feel all that guilty in front of Big B when the sexy Sam himself is screwing around with hookers. Well not only that his speech after the song also looked forced as an effort to get back reassuring respect to his image. So I guess from the story point of view, he was not needed but his comedy sure provided me much needed relief. Plus, his natural acting deserves plaudits especially in the scene where the Big B looks all stunned eye to SRK and says "Good joke".

On the performance grounds, I guess SRK has more screen space and time. He hams at times but he also does well in some scenes. I was pleased to see him carrying out the table scene where he confessed his love. It was surprising. Why? The shake of head so much as grand old man of Veer Zaara beats me. Rani irritates and I think she would prefer to forget this. I have never seen a more irritating beauty than Rani onscreen in KANK. Preity has a cold role and whatever scope she gets she shines but neither her character is given depth nor is it that explained. Its Abhishek who makes a muscle out of his well groomed mannerisms and in fact clear cut characterization i.e. he loves his wife and has a nice work life.

Screenplay is filthy and twists the story. The scenes are enacted in a way to make a hero out of SRK and Rani and their love as if they have martyred and audience should feel pity for them. That is where KANK became KANKY. Kjo as a director took some steps forward and then took leaps backward, hence he gets 2/5 from me.

I said the general audience needs to be entertained and then it gets into the intricacies of the characters but due to illogical plotting and attempts to show cheating of lovers as heroism for no valid reason in the screenplay made audience yawn and look for the clock. Had the audience, with which I shared the auditorium, not clapped when Preity slapped SRK, my faith would have died in the sensibilities of the cinegoer. And the so called movie philosophy fell flat on its face.

KANK needs to be tanked but by the time we people watch it and realize it is a bad movie, it will be a blockbuster. Its like every one shouting CHOR CHOR and getting looted in the meantime. Heh!!
