A pure love story as if it is happening just at your next doors is ‘Kaadhal’ meaning ‘Love’….. a very simple story featuring an immature love that ultimately spoils the most precious lives of two adolescents due to the cruelty of traditional superstitious oldies is all absolutely ‘Kaadhal’ about !!!

Kaadhal – The Story

The Storyline goes about with the love between a poor Mechanic boy and a highly rich 12th standard girl. Aishwarya (heroine) teases Muruga (hero) on a few occasions when she accidentally meets him on her way to / back from school. Muruga getting annoyed by her behaviour slaps her and strictly warns her despite the fact that she belongs to a very rich family. Thereafter Aishwarya starts singing love melodies falling in love with Muruga and starts chasing him & gradually love begins blooming between the two.

At a situation when Aishwarya’s family members start seeking another alliance for her, the lovers run away to Chennai from Madurai where Muruga seeks the help of his friend Stephen. Stephen who already shares a small room in a Mansion in one of the cramped streets at Chennai requests the lovers to somehow while away a night at theatres, bus journeys etc. etc…. the lovers realize how difficult it is to even get an accommodation in a place like Chennai which doesn’t grant lodging for unmarried people. Finally the lovers get married in front of a Street Vinayakar temple with the help of his friend Stephen. As the lovers do not have the required Address / ID proofs, they are unable to get their marriage registered legally.

Aishwarya’s family somehow manages to trace the lovers at Chennai with the help of their Daadhaas and convinces her that they will officially arrange for their marriage and take the lovers back to their hometown. There the blinkered people round up the lovers and beat Muruga very badly almost to death and removes Aishwarya’s Mangal-Sutra and gives her a fresh bath after duly removing her dresses and makes her (according to them) a newly born girl !! They succeed in influencing her to forget Muruga threatening that otherwise Muruga wouldn’t be left alive.

The story goes to “After a few Years !” – You find Aishwarya as the mother of a kid travelling on the road with her husband in his bike. She identifies Muruga (by the tattoo of her name on his chest) on the road as a mentally challenged fellow. Shocked by his pathetic form, Aishwarya faints and after hospitalisation again finds Muruga on the road who’s not in a position to identify her or recollect their ex-love despite her continued pathetic howling. Finally whom does she choose …… her married life or Muruga is the Story !!

Balaji Sakthivel / Director of ‘Kaadhal’

Produced by Shankar, Kaadhal is certainly a great attempt by the relatively new Director Balaji Sakthivel. The Director shines remarkably at the excellent pronunciation of Madurai language by hero and the heroine (they have spoken with their own voice). The film has been shot in Meenakshi Amman Famous not-a-city not-a-village kind of background in Madurai. Most of the characters speaking pakka Madurai language is a highlight of the movie, which gets Kaadhal a little out of the monotonous stuffs !

Joshua Sridhar / Music

Joshua Sridhar is the magnificent pillar behind the success of Kaadhal as the background music adds great strength to most of the scenes. The song “Thottu Thottu Ennai Vethu Kali Mannai…….” is just marvelous & peppy. The very natural scenes of the lovers chatting with each other, hero chasing her when she goes for a school excursion and many more ordinary backgrounds adds a youthful charm to the song.

“Vunakena Piranthen….” is a beautiful heart-melting classic melody, featuring the lovers’ spending a night in Chennai’s theatres, mofussel buses etc….. The other songs are also unique in their own way, leaving us murmuring them for a very long time.

Hats Off to you Joshua Sridhar…… an excellent job !

Vijay Milton / Cinematography

A Hip Hip Hurrah….. !!!! to Vijay Milton ‘cause of his extensive coverage of the nook and corners of Madurai – he has made Madurai look really beautiful ! The fast two-wheeler riding by Aishwarya and, her lover Muruga chasing her with his bike reveals the dedication of Milton ! Also, the scenes of the entire song on the occasion of the maturing function of Aishwarya have been shot perfectly making us jump with enthusiasm.

The ‘Kaadhal’ Characters

‘The Pair’

The fairly new faces Bharath (Hero Muruga) and Sandhya (Heroine Aishwarya) are the best choice for their characters.

‘Sandhya’

Sandhya has done extremely well as a playful daughter, a fanatical lover, a serious wife and finally as a wild and crazy woman. She speaks a very fluent Madurai Tamil which makes her characterization very enchanting.

‘Bharath’

The ‘Boys’ Famous Bharath has lived as a simple mechanic and a yearning lover. In many scenes, we find a distinctive love glimpse in him and he has taken great care in rendering an innocent expression while repeatedly asking Sandhya if she would really marry him only. He shines as a matured actor in the climax as a mentally challenged chap…. In a moment he makes us think that we are seeing on screen a really mad man!!

‘Sukumar’

“Appa Matter Ippa Meter!!” the famous Raj TV Announcer Sukumar has acted very well as Muruga’s friend Stephen residing in a bachelor’s Mansion at Chennai. His character plays quite a significant role in the picture.

Master ‘Arun Kumar’

My review would be incomplete without a mention about this kutti chutti boy. He has acted as a helper in Muruga’s mechanic shop and in many scenes he easily gets our applause. His spitting in the tea & urinating in the cool drinks for Stephen and when Aishwarya’s relatives come to the mechanic shop looking for Muruga, this boy deliberately taking them all around Madurai almost the whole day to show them Muruga’s house. Superb Arun Kumar !!

Pros

•Music

•Director

•Simple & Clear Storyline

•Cinematography

Cons

•Such a small boy urinating in the cool drink to be given to Stephen

•All the people of the heroine’s hometown joining hands in removing the mangalsutra of the heroine (Balaji Sakthivel where are our traditional ethics heading to ?)

•All of a sudden all the mansion bachelors extending help to the lovers is unbelievable

Overall, ‘Kaadhal’ does have appreciable filmi aspects with an absolutely perfect music and would be liked a lot by most of us in general !!! Do watch this touching love story!!!
