Harrison Ford stars in this extremely watchable and re-watchable movie based on true events of the cold war. It tells a part of the story from the Russian side of how the nations did everything and sacrificed numerous lives during this period. Perhaps it is the best example to prove the adage, “the best way to avoid war is to prepare for one”.
Yes there never was a war but that was because either side was scared of how much punch the other side had.
This story is based on a submarine, K-19, which the Russians have created to carry out their threats of Nuclear attacks on America. The US at this point had already got Moscow and Leningrad in their sights and the only way the Russians knew they could hold them back from attacking was to instill the fear of the repercussions in them. For this purpose K-19, captained by Harrison Ford was sent forth to test the submarine as fast as possible. The Russians desperation can be judged by the fact that why the ship was not completely ready it was still sent forth.
The movie takes you through the lives of the crew members and Harrison Ford who do not see eye to eye at all. Harrison Ford was a man on a mission. He was determined to do whatever was required to complete the task handed out to him. The crew thought he pushed them too hard. However after numerous near skirmishes and a few testing times the crew, finally, successfully tested the submarines capacity. The Russians back in Moscow once more showed their desperation and asked Ford to now take the sub over to the US and target Washington.
Ford immediately began this journey but was cut short in his attempts due to a leak in nuclear reactor. There was no way to manually repair this in safety as the nuclear reactor was a sealed unit and was virtually impossible to get too….So what happens next…..well you just have to watch it to find out….
It really is a moving story of how individuals forget everything else and form a team, how men with different priorities put everything aside for their country. In short…IT’S A MUST WATCH.
