This fort is one of the largest fortification in the world and is situated in the city of Jaisalmer . Its is a world heritage site. It is known as the Golden fort or Sonar Quila. The walls are made of yellow sandstones. The fort is situated in the heart of the city and stands amidst the great sandy Thar desert on Trikuta hill. Currently about 5000 people resides in the little homes in the fort. Drainage is very poor so one has to take care when walking around. The architecture is really beautiful. The way of life in the fort is very primitive, but for me it was a great experience to see the different ways of living, I truly admire them. The view from the fort of the whole city is breath taking. When visiting the fort one should remember there are many narrow lanes and stairways and uneven parts, so wear good walking and comfortable shoes. The occupants of the fort were very accommodating and allowed us to take picture s of their private home. There is no entry ticket to the fort or camera charges, but the havelis within the fort area is chargeable. Furthermore there are many handicrafts sold at entrance of the fort and they are reasonably priced provided you don't go with a guide to purchase as they generally get a commission. One more thing that one could take a rickshaw / otto to see part of the fort if you don't like walking.
