Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron was a landmark movie for Bollywood. In fact it is probably the only movie of its genre - satire and black humour - that Bollywood has produced. Starring Naseeruddin Shah, Ravi Baswani, Bhakti Barve, Pankaj Kapur, Om Puri, Satish Shah and(a young slim) Satish Kaushik and Neena Gupta, the film is a wry commentary on the building mafia of Mumbai(then Bombay) in the early eighties and the corruption of the municipal officials who let them abuse regulations. The movie has many memorable scenes and dialogues laced with situational and(for once) really funny slapstick comedy too.
The plot and the characters are both built impeccably. Two naive struggling photographers(Naseer and Baswani) get commissioned by a beautiful magazine editor(Barve) to get some dirt on a couple of builders(Kapur and Puri) and a corrupt official(Satish Shah) - The screenplay is so awesome right from the time the photographers try to flirt with their future employer to the wrangling between the builders(and the Mud Island bungalow'thoda khao thoda pheko" plot) to the memorable dead body chase! And the dialogues:
"Main tho cement main reth milaataa hoon; voh to reth mein cement milaataa hoon" to "America kitnaa advanced country hai - vahaan pe peene kaa pani alag, gutter ka pani alag"!
Mind blowing.
