About the Reviewer:

I joined IIT G in 2004, and left in 2008. I got a JEE rank around 1100 and am doing a masters in a top rated university in the US right now. I chose computer science at IITG.

About IIT G:

Positives: The profs are as good as any other IIT. The place is safe as any where else, and about as accessible(well, there is an airport less than an hour away). The campus has more hostels now, a swimming pool, a few tennis courts, and a well equipped sports complex. The infrastructure, being new, is as good if not better than other IITs.

Negatives: Guwahati is not the best city to live in, in the world. So if you intend to "live up" while in college, this is clearly not going to be a DU like experience. IIT Delhi, I guess, would be a better place for that. Forget getting a girlfriend here, if you had plans. The sex-ratio is skewed, and IIT girls, to put it politely, are not very beautiful. The city is too far, and not the kind of place you would go around looking for girls. But that my personal view, and for most of you, it probably would not be a factor, I guess.

Is it  for me?(Your question)

If you plan to go for an MS after your BTech, this is a nice place to come, esp. if you can get the branch that you want here. For people who plan to sit for the CAT and go for the IIMs, the IITs in the larger towns would probably be a better idea.

Was it for me?(Introspective question)

Personally, if I had to make my post-JEE choice for department-insti, I might have gone for IITD chemical engg. Probably because I'd have had a better life in those four years, if I had stayed in the town where I studied in school. Careerwise, I guess I am better placed than I might have been if I had chosen to go to D. Computer Science turned out to be an amazing subject to study, and academically, I loved the place. Socially, Delhi might have been better. Bombay doesn't seem to be good "value for rank". Kanpur if you want to slog like hell(from what I hear).  Madras, if you are south Indian, I guess. Some of my north Indian friends regret going there. Roorkee. I don't know. From what I have heard about the Infra and life, Guwahati would be a better option.
