I read this book when I wasnt really American-teen-culture-literate, if you know what that might mean. But nevertheless, it was fun, her narration was great. You feel like you're Opal while reading it, with a proper, firstperson view of everything. It has many cliches, yet the humour really lifts that.
And I read how she was accused for plagiarism, and there were some passages on wikipedia which showed how similar her book was to many other things, but truly, half of it was not even passably the same. And besides, when there are some similarities in plot there will be some similarities in the passages, but even if she did do it intently, I think she's a good enough author to be more famous for her writing than the plgiarism case.
So, basically this book is definitely genuine through its thick powdered glory, and a good read for young adults.
