The pros and cons of home schooling
Jun 26, 2001 06:51 PM 11847 Views

I have read over the last couple of years many opinions on home schooling and decided to write mine. Remember in reading this, that what is right for one person is fine and this is only my opinion.

I started out in public schools and then my parents decided to try me for a year in home schooling but at a friends home with their children.

Teaching at home has some pros to it. You can get a lot more individual attention than you can in an over crowded class room. Also you can structure the day any way that you want so if there is a day that the parents want to take off or the child is sick it can be done at another time.It also allows you much more time with your children and you have them with you all the time.

To me the last part I think is the biggest hinderence to the parent and the child. It is not good for them to be together 24 hours a day and not go out into the real world and see what that is like.

Yes you may attend functions and go out with friends but it isn't the same as being with them in a school all the time.

This review may not be very popular but it is only my view that home schooling is not something that would have worked for me and my son. He was shy and kept to himself and therefore needed to be out with other kids and learning to socialise.

It depends on the child and the parent and should be up to each to make their own choice. I have nothing against it for those that find it works for them, other than the fact I think it shelters the child too much and doesn't allow for more social skills and will make it harder for them to ever leave the nest so to speak.

The growing up years is what forms the life of the child.

Please don't take me wrong. I am not saying that home schooling can't work or putting it down for those that chose this. I am merely saying from my view point I did not like it and it would not have worked in my situation as a child or as a parent.

I fully believe personally that a child needs to be away from the parent at times and that the parent needs time to themselves and it just wouldn't be my cup of tea.

Back to the idea of more individual attention, yes if the child is having a problem in a certain area the teachers do not always have the extra time but it is then the parent can work with the child after school or hire a tutor to get them through this problem.

I like public school as there is always so much to do and things to get involved in that you can't from home. As an example I have always been interested in writing and loved working on the school newspaper.

You are the one that has to make the choice of what is right for your family and if you choose home schooling then no one should treat the children any different or think they are not getting an education.
