I remember my childhood days when the only excuse for a radio station was Akashwani (ALL India Radio) ... and how exceedingly sleepy I felt listening to it. But there were good programs on it as well. No one can forget India's first celebrity RJ - Ameen Sayani and his peculiar narration style which was copied by many on their shows.
As the listeners' views and perspectives changed, lesser and lesser people listened to it. Times of India revamped the way Indian audience expected their radio to react when they turned it on with Radio Mirchi. Lots of hindi songs to listen to. It even had some time for English songs ... not too much .. around 1/2 an hour or so. It definitely did not speak to me much. Being a huge rock fan (both new and old), I had to arrange for my music myself and this led me to just ignore the Indian radio.
Then long after this episode , while leaving for work I tuned into Hit 95 FM. It was the last day I ever turned to any other channel. It was just the channel for me. It helped me in 2 ways :
a. Get upto date with new songs coming up. MTv and Channel V had become quite the drags since they only play Hindi songs nowadays. Its either Hit 95 FM on radio or VH1 on TV for me.
b. Since it plays a good variety of music , I started getting my daily dose of music while driving to work and while driving back.
Primarily RJ Sarthak who hosts the morning madness on the channel is the most famous RJ. People absolutely love this guy. I had the chance to speak to him myself and I found him not only entertaining but also very knowledgable and recourseful as far as western music was concerned.
RJ Abheesh, who hosts the evening show has acquired quite the name for himself as well.
There are others like Suroshree and Sonia who are very well working their way up the ladder. It would be unfair to state that all the channel has achieved is good name. Apparently a DJ Bubble program acquired quite bad reviews for her silly jokes and a weird accent. But on the whole this channel has excellent programs with continuous music in the evenings and superb games for callers in between music during both morning and evening.
There is, however, a drawback they face. Their music is kind of repetative for a regular listener. They do play the popular music but they play the same songs so often that after a couple of days you might start hating a particular song. Like I told Sarthak when I spoke to him once, they ought to have more songs in their vault. Be it Creed, Elvis, The Beatles, Black Eyed Peas, MLTR, Linkin Park or Pearl Jam ... they need to have more from each band / singer.
But deltas apart, they play a very healthy variety of songs and I can honestly say, it makes my day to listen to Hit 95 FM everyday.
