Hero MotoCorp started life as Hero-Honda which was a joint venture between Hero Cycles and Honda Motorcycles. The bikemaker commenced its journey in the Indian market with the CD100 which is a basic commuter but with a 4-stroke engine. The breakthrough product for the Gurgaon based two-wheeler manufacturer was the Splendor. In the form the new Splendor it had a basic, rugged, reliable and highly fuel efficient motorcycle and the sales of the bike sky rocketed. In fact, almost 22 years after its launch the Hero Splendor is still the highest selling motorcycle in India and continues to be the bread and butter product for Hero. Commuter motorcycles have been the primary focus for Hero and this resulted in it becoming the highest selling two-wheeler manufacturer in the globe in 2001. It also expanded its product portfolio and the CBZ was among the first performance oriented motorcycles from its stable which was followed by the legendary Karizma. But in 2011, Hero and Honda parted company, thus forming Hero MotoCorp. It was expected that Hero wouldn’t be able to survive without the technical backing of Honda but despite the setback it still is going strong and maintains its position as the market leader. Over the past few years, Hero MotoCorp has expanded its portfolio with a keen interest in scooters in the recent past apart from commuters. In the coming few years we can see some performance oriented motorcycles heading our way which will be developed indigenously at its world class R&D centre that was inaugurated in early 2016.
