HAMARI ADHURI KAHANI: Never Again!

Mahesh Bhatt continues with his semi-autobiographical sagas. Some worked but now that phase of success is fizzling out. HAMARI ADHURI KAHANI is based on his parents - Nanabhai Bhatt, Shirin Mohammad Ali - and his stepmother's love story.

Vasudha(Vidya Balan, 37) is a single mother with a young son. Her husband Hari(Rajkumar Rao, 30) had gone missing five years back. She works as a florist in a high-end hotel. Luck smiles on her when a rich bachelor Aarav(Emran Hashmi, 36) falls for her. When she decides to restart her life with Aarav, Hari reappears! What will she do?

In this age of modernity, those boring senseless traditions are unexpectedly unbelievable. The chemistry between Emran and Vidya is simply not there. And there is no situation, the audience can identify or connect with. Mahesh Bhatt made ARTH(1982), a definitive feminist woman-oriented movie that made the audience sit-up and think. And after 33 years in 2015, he makes HAK, that will make women shudder with its regressive tone. ARTH won National Film Award and that trend continued with DADDY(1989), HUM HAIN RAHI PYAR KE(1993), and ZAKHM(1999). Mahesh seems to have lost his touch. Pity.

Emran's and Vidya's bad phase collectively continues. Good performances and a good song alone will not salvage a below-average movie.

Rao will definitely gain from it. He has had a dream run with SHAHID(2013), QUEEN(2014), CITYLIGHTS(2014) with a passable DOLLY KI DOLI(2015). He should have listened to his gut feeling and not done HAK, never mind Mahesh Bhatt's coaxing. Rao has a long way to go. Definitely looking forward to SHIMLA MIRCHI(2016). He has a history of good acting roles. That should continue.

Emran should drastically change or this is the end of a promising actor. GHANCHAKKAR(2013), RAJA NATWARLAL(2014), UNGLI(2014), and MR X 3D(2015), he is way past hat-tricks of blunders. He must seriously think about his choice of movies and career. New heroes have already taken over. And Emran's lucky carefree career is definitely over after Murder(2004). He survived on the family connection of the Bhatts. He is a fine actor. He should reinvent himself. After GHANCHAKKAR(2013), with Vidya, this is his second disaster. Can he afford a third one? Wishing him al the best for TIGERS(2016), AZHAR(2016) and SADAK 2(2016). One Rs 100+ cr movie is my least expectation.

Vidya is no mainstream actress. She should do maturer roles befitting her age and plumper body. After the debacles of GHANCHAKKAR(2013), SHAADI KE SIDE EFFECTS(2014), BOBBY JASOSS(2014), she has gone way past hat-trick. Her best movies - THE DIRTY PICTURE(2011) and KAHAANI(2012) came before her marriage on December 12 2012. Obviously she cannot handle acting post marriage. Even audience expectations change about a heroine post matrimony barring a few lucky ones. She should take a sabbatical and make a drastic change. Considering TANU WEDS MANU RETURNS is still going great guns, DIL DHADAKNE DO riding well on multiplexes, and JURASSIC WORLD about to have a dream run, HAK's fate is not hard to predict. And that is not on a positive note.

Mahesh Bhatt(66) has found a good career switch by unofficially crooning the title track. He should take stock of the situation. Put a full-stop to family tales. Between parivaar and karobaar, the situation is ravivaar.

This review is boring. It reflects my boredom of watching a pathetic, cringing fare. You don't wish to be bored, eh! So, you know what to do - AVOID! Popcorn, anyone?
