*** Maintaining Long Hair in Winters ***

In the winter season, the hair becomes dry due to cold winds and indoor heating. Thus, it’s very important that we take proper care of our hair during winters to prevent them from damage.

It’s much easier to maintain short hair, but if you wish to have long, healthy & good-looking hair then you should be prepared to put in a certain amount of time & effort in their nourishment.

For starters, make sure that you don’t shampoo them too frequently as it may remove all the natural oil from your hair leading to dryness. Opt for a mild shampoo and wash your hair with cold or lukewarm water(since hot water is harmful for the hair).

Before shampooing give your hair a nice massage. It keeps oxygenated blood moving to hair roots and not only promotes hair growth but also relaxes the senses.

Now comes the important part – conditioning. In winters you need to condition your hair daily(if you are using a heavier and richer moisturizer, then once a week is enough), since intensive hair conditioners help combat dryness. Conditioners are a must after every wash, especially for dry and thick hair.

Apply the moisturizer to the mid-length and end sections of hair. Wrap your hair in a towel(or a plastic bag) for 10 minutes. This will create a humid, moist environment and allow the conditioner to penetrate deeply. There isn’t any need to moisturize the roots of the hair, since the scalp’s oil glands keep them sufficiently moist. Once you have your hair moist, lock in the moisture by running your hair through cold water, this will also give your hair an extra shine.

Hair serum can also be used for this purpose. Take two or three drops of serum. Rub your palms together and apply on each strand, as the hair is wet. Hair products that have the word, 'Replenish' on them are made to moisturize your hair.

Take special care when you are outside the house. If you are traveling on a two-wheeler tie your hair with a scarf, to protect them from acute dryness but it shouldn’t be so tight that it restricts the circulation in the scalp. Never go out with your hair wet, wait for them to dry because if the weather is too cold they may freeze and break.

Don’t be lazy in combing. Comb your hair at least three to four times a day to get rid off the dust particles. Gentle use of a wide-toothed comb prevents tangling and damage. Combing should always be done in downward strokes.

Try to avoid blow dryers as much as possible and allow your hair to dry naturally. However, sometimes we do have to use them because of the shortage of time. In that case you need to know how to use them properly. Only use dryer on damp hair, not when it is dripping wet. Use it on lowest speed and lowest heat setting. Keep moving it constantly and don’t concentrate the heat in one spot, as it can dry out the moisture from that part and damage it permanently. And never ever, wait for your hair to dry completely, switch the dryer off before that.

Remember that good healthy hair add charm to our beauty. If you choose to keep your hair long then you must follow these rituals religiously. Otherwise, it’s better if you trim you hair to a manageable length. It’s better to have healthy looking short hair rather than badly kept long hair, isn’t it?
