Pathetic Service - HDFC Personal Loans

I received a letter from HDFC Bank informing me that I was preapproved for a personal loan of Rs.80000/-. I called the toll free number to apply for the loan but the number was not working. I then called phone banking and they gave me the number of the Personal loans division. I managed to get through after trying for about half an hour. The person who answered the call promised to call me back in about an hour but did not.


I then sent the application form to the nearest HDFC Branch in Nungambakkam, Chennai and handed it over on 20th February 2004. The lady assured me that the loan would be processed within two days. Since I did not hear from anybody I went to the bank and reminded her on Monday 23rd Feb 2004 and she informed me that somebody would soon call me. The same day a representative called me and informed me that he had just received the documents from this lady and would come to meet me to collect some other documents.


I waited for him but he did not turn up. However, he met me the next day 24th February 2004 and collected 6 checks, a signed application form, address proof, id proof and a ECS authorisation form. He said he would come back in the afternoon to collect my latest payslip which was not available when he met me.


However he did not come back and I do not know the status of the loan as yet. I still have not received any information from HDFC Bank about the loan. 6 of my checks are out there with somebody I don't know and the loan amount has not yet been credited to my account.Today is 27th February 2004.


Points to ponder:


1.Why does HDFC Bank give a toll free number that does not work?


2.Why did HDFC Bank commit to processing the loan within two days in the letter sent to me?


3.Why did the letter from HDFC Bank promise that this loan was pre-approved and would be processed without any paperwork? However, the representative wanted a Salary slip, id proof and address proof.


4.Why weren't the documents handed over to the concerned person immediately by the lady at the bank?


5.Why did the representative commit to meet me and did not ?


6.Why did the representative promise to come back to collect the salary slip and did not?


7.Why doesn't anybody in HDFC Bank bother to keep the customer informed on the status of his application and disbursement of the loan?


8.I have a savings account and my company's current account with HDFC Bank from 1999 onwards. I also have a HDFC Credit card. If this is the service that is offered to a customer who has been with the bank for the past so many years what kind of service do new customers get. Or is this kind of treatment meant only for loyal customers?
