HDFC Charges Hefty Penalty for Low Balance, Not Closed the Account Even after Repeated Request(Waited 4 months)


I opened salary account with HDFC Bank in 2006 and when I changed my company in 2007, I continued to use the same account by transferring the salary to HDFC bank account and used all banking facility. In 2015, I stopped crediting my salary from new job in HDFC account. One day, when I visited, HDFC east fort branch, one personal banker in 2015 October, noted my low balance. I continued to use the account with low balance and the bank started charging penalty for low balance from April 2016 onwards. Every month, they used to charge Rs 500/ and started increasing the penalty. I called the customer care and asked how can I close my HDF account and they told send an application filled by customer to the home branch and it will be closed within 2 days. After one month, they send back the application form saying no need to fill the debit card number and check leave number. I send another application form with requested details again to the bank immediately in June 2016. I delinked my credit card account in June 2016, from this savings account based on the request from customer care. They didn’t closed my account till now in 23d October 2016. I used to call one of the bank staff who’s number and name I got from HDFC bank mail to me. She works in Ravipuram, Kochi branch office of HDFC Bank. She told there is no issue with account and no reason why thy didn’t close the account. Every day she will tell she will close the account today but never closed so far. I am paying my credit card bill through online banking facility of SBI. I dint understand, why they don’t close the bank account even repeated request from the customer several time. They send me message as on 16th October 2016, your account balance as on 16th October 2016 is -4682.21. I told her first in my life I am seeing negative balance in bank account. My problem is the bank is not closing the account as they client has requested many times. We cannot call to any of the HDF branch directly. There is no direct branch number like other banks. We can call only customer care and put any complaint. They should close the accout when the customer aske to close. It is not a loan account and its just saving account not operating for several months and bank was simply adding penalty.
