Staff Attitude:

I have been visiting Gunasheela Surgical and Maternity hospital for the past few months for check-ups for pregnancy. This is one of the oldest hospitals in Bangalore and specialises in invitro-fertilisation techniques. They also attend to normal pregnancy consultations.

Goodness:

  1. The doctors are very experienced and patient. They explain everything in detail and do not try and hide information from the patient, whatever the condition maybe.

  2. Dr. Devika Gunasheela is the youngest of the Gunasheelas, and is a very good doctor.

  3. I heard the senior-most doctor is Dr. Sulochana Gunasheela who seems to interact with IVF patients or delivary cases.

  4. Dr. Rita is also very good with patients.(Their name badges are useful).

  5. The reception staff are exceptionally good. They give relevant information and are very polite.

Badness:

  1. The common complaint I have heard about this hospital is that the patient does not get to meet Dr. Sulochana, though all prescriptions are given out in her name. Only duty doctors(young girls who look like they have just passed out of medicine) attend to patients. The senior doctors are consulted by the duty doctors, if required. It gives a very incomplete feeling when a person leaves the hospital.

  2. Too many scans. Every time I go there they recommend a scan.(Rs. 450 for a normal scan, and Rs. 1200 for a Doppler scan). I have read that it is advisable to take only 3 scans for a whole pregnancy term). When I mentioned this to the(duty) doctors, they dismissed it saying their hospital recommends 6-7 scans per term and there is nothing wrong with it. It is a well-known fact that scans do interfere with the development of the foetus. Just because it has been practised for a long time, it does not make it right.

  3. The hospital is very crowded at all times. There are long waiting hours before one gets to see the doctor. Prepare to spend at least half a day for every check-up. Husbands/fathers have to wait outside, so it will be worse for them. It is perfectly safe to go unaccompanied also. Sometimes if the doctors are held up in surgery(we assume), they make you wait for 1-1 1/2 hours with no intimation("Wait for 10 minutes, they say"). This happens quite rarely though, but is frustrating enough. I have seen many women weep in the hospital out of hunger and tiredness! Make sure you carry food, water, and reading material for accompanying people with you. They also have a canteen.

  4. The staff at the blood/urine test section are unfriendly and rude. The radiologist is the worst. Radio FM is always playing in the scan room with the radiologist and her assistant singing songs. The radiologist(dont know her name) was on her mobile for about 7-8 minutes WHILE the scan is being done. Radiations are free for the foetus, I guess! Discussing personal problem, like a failed foreign trip or her experience at the gym or how to get an internet connection, is totally unprofessional and highly irritating!.

Well, every hospital has its problems. Despite all this, Gunasheela is a very good hospital and the doctors are good. As far as medical treatment is concerned, it is a very good choice.
