Story:

I am not a big fan of Amitav Gosh, I had just forced myself through “The hungry tide”. Yet, I bought this book after hearing some positive reviews from friends. I must say this book was not as disappointing. The plot laid carefully over three generations and many different places.

The story starts with Rajkumar(an Indian in Burma) and Dolly(a orphaned Burmese girl working for the queen) as kids and ends when they are old and have become great-grand parents. It is the story of their youth, their marriage, children, grand-children, times of war.

The story is very artfully intervened through Burma, Ratnagiri, Malay and Kolkata. The book is well-researched, especially the bits about the war.But as many would agree, the story telling is still a drag and some parts are very slow. That makes you force yourself through those pages. All-in-all a average book.
