Cleansing is one of the most important steps in your skincare regime. If you aren't washing your skin thoroughly enough, dirt can clog pores and lead to spots.

On the other hand, if you are cleansing too much or using excessive cleanser, you are constantly stripping away essential skin oils, leading to skin that feels tight and flaky.

No matter what your skin type, cleanse no more than twice a day with a cleanser formulated for your skin type.

If your skin is oily and you think that you can change oil production by excessively washing it with a strong soap, think again. Over washing your face can stimulate oil glands, making your skin even oilier.

An easy cleanser test

Find out if your cleanser is doing its job well. Your cleanser should make your skin feel faintly taut right after you use it. This slight tightness will tell you that the cleanser has removed the surface oils that collect dirt. But if the tautness lasts more than 10-15 minutes, it means that the cleanser is drying out your skin. This would mean that you should switch to a gentler, milder cleanser.

Tips on face cleansing. The best way to cleanse your face is to use warm water and a mild cleanser twice a day, probably in the morning and before you go to bed. This is how you should wash your face: Wet your face with warm water.Take a little bit(about the size of a pea) of face wash or cleanser in your palm. Gently apply the cleanser all over your face for 15-30 seconds, in a circular massaging motion, upwards and outwards. Splash your face with running water several times until you feel that all the cleanser is rinsed off.

Pat your face dry with a clean, soft face towel. Never rub your skin vigorously while washing or wiping the face as this can lead to darkening of skin and lead to uneven skin tone. You need to use cleansing milk if: You have mature skin as it needs to be cleansed gently. Cleansing milk prev. You need to use cleansing milk if:

You have mature skin as it needs to be cleansed gently. Cleansing milk prevents drying of skin while removing sebum and grease. This helps to prevent the formation of premature wrinkles. You are outdoors and exposed to pollution, dust, etc for more than half an hour every day.

While using cleansing milk, take some cleansing milk on a soft cotton ball and wipe the face gently in a circular motion. Remove the remaining cleansing milk by splashing some water on your face. oners help to remove surface skin cells, soap residue and oils from the skin. They may be sold under a variety of names: astringents, fresheners, clarifying lotions, etc.

When you put a toner on your face, your skin tingles. Most people enjoy the sensation of coolness and find it refreshing.

Toners are an important part of your daily skin care regimen. After cleansing your face, toners help to restore the pH balance of your skin and prepare it for the next step - moisturising. Toners can be of two types. The first variety caters to oily skin, specifically formulated to remove excess and stubborn dirt that gets accumulated on your skin. These may contain up to 70% alcohol and are used after milky or oily cleansers. The second variety is formulated for normal or dry skin and leave the skin cleansed and softened, due to which it feels less stretched and taut.

Toners also help in tightening your skin pores and making your skin surface smoother. Just as over-cleansing can strip away the natural oils your skin needs, so can excessive use of the wrong toner. So use the toners meant for your skin type and be guided by the reaction of your skin. Moisturisers also keep the skin hydrated and prevent dry air around us from pulling moisture out of the skin. It makes your facial skin more supple and healthy. It also prepares your skin for make-up, which glides on more easily and sets better on a smooth complexion.

Moisturisers for dry skin contain emollients that'sit' on the skin's surface and prevent evaporation or water loss. Over time you will notice that your skin doesn't produce as much natural oil as it used to, which reduces its ability to retain moisture leaving it wrinkled, dry and rough. Applying moisturiser can help to prevent this. Choose one that is absorbed easily and doesn't leave a greasy film on the skin. Hence, women over the age of 40, whose skin tends to be drier, may find that oil-based moisturisers work best because they are thicker and richer than oil-free products.

For those with oily skin, there is some good news. You may not have to use a moisturiser at all because your skin's natural oils may protect it from water loss. But even oily skin can have dry patches during winter when the water content is less and the skin may feel dry at places, especially around the mouth and eyes. One can use an oil-free moisturiser that is water-based and, hydrate the skin without an oily feel, or blocking your pores. They work well especially if you are prone to acne(pimples) or tend to get breakouts during your menstrual cycle.

Many daytime moisturisers have sunscreens added to them so that you also get valuable protection from the sun's rays.

Nighttime moisturisers are enriched with special ingredients that work on your skin while you are asleep and help replenish vital nutrients and rejuvenate your skin. For those with dry mature skins, one should look at using moisturisers in the night as well.

righten up your complexion in an instant with this skincare treat called facial scrubs.

Technically known as'exfoliation', it is a simple method that removes dead surface cells from the top of your skin, revealing the plumper, younger ones underneath. It also encourages your skin to speed up cell production, which means that the cells that reach the surface are younger and better looking. The result is a brighter, smoother complexion - no matter what your age.

As you get older, it becomes more important to exfoliate as dead skin cells can make the skin appear dull and lifeless.

However, never be too vigorous as the outer skin layer is the first line of defense against attack from sunlight and pollution and vigorously rubbing the skin or using scrub too often can damage and darken the skin.

Avoid scrubbing the delicate area around the eyes as the skin is very fine here and it can be easily irritated.

Dry or normal skins can use an exfoliator once a week. Oily or combination skins can be exfoliated once or twice a week. As a rule, avoid this treatment on sensitive skin or if you have bad acne.
