Trek to chembra peak - kerala
Jan 27, 2009 03:11 PM 8195 Views

4 of us planned a trek to chembra peak.the highest peak in kerala. We took necessary things like backpack , tent , food , water etc and started from banglore by 8 pm on friday .Route - banglore-mysore-nanjangud-gundulpet-sultan batery-kalpetta-mepdi-chembra peak

We reached mepadi by 3 am. Road condition is good. so travel was not tiresome. There is a tourist information center in mepadi. it was locked.so no use of it. Then we went to the entry of estate which leads to chembra peak.

Actually the route to chembra peak is via a tea estate ( which is owned by brothers who stay in calicut.. and its around 1200 acres..lucky fellows). entry to the estate gate is after 6am.there is a gatekeeper who keeps the gate closed til 6am

Then we came back to mepadi and freshened up in bustand restrooms.. ( it was pathetic...) .Then morning hd breakfast at TAJ hotel ..and took a room rental at paris hotel ( plz avoid this hotel if u have other alternatives.. ) main reason for renting was to park car.

Since our car had some oil leakage.. showed it to a mechanic .they open after 9am only. he took just 10 rs for tightening a bolt. Then we had one more round of breakfast and strted walking towards tea estate.

once reached the gate..after 1 km of walking in tea estate.. there is forest dept office. There they collect hefty fee for trekking.

500/- for group of ten or less.

we were 4. and argued a lot and that guy reduced it to 300/- . crap.. for climbing with our energy..we need to pay soo mch money :(

camping is not allowed in dry season ..coz of forest fire problem.

then took an auto from there till base of chembra peak. there is a watch tower.

strted our hike at 12pm

from there it took around 1.15 mins to reach the lake. not a great hike.. as the route was full dusty...

aftergetting heart shaped lake.. it took arnd 2 hrs to reach peak.by 4 we were on peak.

peak is amazing and the landscape is wonderful. its very windy and becomes v cold after 4pm.

then got down and reached watch tower .. asked the forest dept guy to call an auto. came to hotel.

over all its a ok trek.not v tiring..and risky..but the tea estates and amazing peak... landscape...fog..mist.. gives a good getaway experience from banglore traffic and pollution

tips - carry bottled water from karnataka...as all the botteled water are local brands you get over mepadi.

hope this helps
