THE FIVE BEST REVIEWERS ON MOUTHSHUT

Some of you must be having a good laugh.  Ha ha! He he! Manoj has at last succumbed to the lure of this topic ”Five Best Reviewers on MouthShut”.  But why write under the topic “General Advice on Websites” you must be saying? But I would only say, “No.”  Not in the least.  Why should I writ on a topic which I feel is in itself inappropriate?  I wanted to suggest that this topic be deleted. What better way to do that than to write about it here.  That is why I am here.  That is why I am putting done my thoughts on this topic.  My discussions earlier had been with a few members on a personal level or in a group formed by a few members, however, for the larger good, I thought I must put down my thoughts on this topic on MouthShut.  It is not a case of “grapes are sour”, because I too figure in one such review.   I could not bring myself to rate it, but I did leave a comment after a lot of thought.

SOME CLIPS

I am giving below some clips of M2Ms and comments which a few reviewers on this topic have received.  No names, nothing personal, but just a sample of the emotions that such reviews rake up.

“hope that from the readers

that have chosen the best five

are not racists.

I hope the top are not judged by mouthshut judges only the opinions.

I have read the articles, and yes they are good.

I too should be recognized for my writing on here, I believe I am being set out aside due to racial decisions.

I would think for the contest that is running, it would be up to the judges to judge, not the readers.”

“ABHI BACHE HO AUR BACHE JAISI BAAT KARO!ZYADA JHATPATAYONGE TO GIR KE MAR JAVONGE!mY dEAR child!

dON’T ACT SMART.ok?OTHERWISE bCHOKO THIK KARNA AAT hai.APNE HAD MEN RAHO.”(this wasn’t for a review on this category but an of shoot of something similar.  My apologies to the originator for using it out of context).

“not that it matters pal. but I was hurt not to see my name in your Best reviews list.i was the one whose thinkpad review u effused praises. Anyway”

TOPIC WRONGLY WORDED?

Firstly I feel the topic itself is wrongly worded.  If at all it should have been there, it should have been “The Best Five Reviewers on MouthShut in my Opinion' or better still'My Favourite Five Reviewers on MouthShut'.   After all it is the reviewer’s personal opinion and does not have the official stamp of approval. The web site does not subscribe to it.

WHY THE STRONG REACTIONS?

I do not blame the readers who have given these comments or the M2Ms mentioned above.  They all have a high self esteem.  They are good writers in there own right.

Why do they react so strongly and get so worked up over someone praising someone else?   Everyman has an ego.    Some have large inflated egos and some have it under check.  Everyone who writes here on MouthShut, is looking for recognition of some sort.   Can anyone just name a person who does not want recognition in any form?  Recognition acts as an incentive to write more and write better.

TYPES OF RECOGNITION

There are two types of recognition.  One is recognition by the organizers of the web site in the form of being nominated for Hot Review(based on the number of people reading and rating it), Best Debut, Review of the day, Star Writer or winning a competition conducted by them. The other is recognition by peers in the form of people reading the reviews, rating the reviews, and leaving comments.

WHAT IS WRONG WITH RATING FIVE BEST REVIEWERS?

Reading, rating and commenting on reivews  is acceptable, since, it is based on the perceptions of the person reading the individual review in question.  It has no relationship with the other reviewers.

However, how can a person rate five reviewers as the best reviewers, when he has not read reviews of all the reviewers on MouthShut leave alone reading all reviews of all reviewers?  Such rating is bound to be lopsided and not in the least balanced.   One can accept it as individual perception, but, even that is wrong.   If the individual writing the review on five best reviewers has not read at least one review of all reviewers on MouthShut, can he comment on the best?   I wonder how many people who have written reviews in this category have read reviews of all reviewers on MouthShut.   If not, it can not be a truly honest opinion.   I certainly have not read reviews of all reviewers on MouthShut, so I am in no position to rate anyone as the best five.   Just because I frequently read reviews of five people and I feel they write well, I can not claim that they are the best.

Why do I say so?  Lets take an example.   For a moment imagine a contest taking place in which there are 50 contestants and the judge watches the performance of just 25 participants and selects the best five.   Will it be fair to these 25 whose performance has not even been seen by the judge?  I leave it to you to decide.

I have read all reviews in the category “Five Best Reviewers on MouthShut”.  All are by able writers. The people figuring in them are also able writers(With probably one exception i.e. myself), but yet, I could not bring myself to rate any of these reviews(except one which was probably by mistake), as I felt I too would be succumbing to the bias.

However, this topic is there to stay and many others will probably write on it.  This is just my opinion and it is not necessarily right.  Others are free to follow their thought process.
