What we mean when we say

With sms, e mails, orkut andmouthshut's comment section and every new technology on our door step, I have begun to wonder are we losing the art of holding a good piece of conversation with people we have nothing to say to. How many of us have been a part of a conversation which goes something like:

How is life?

Good, you tell me!

What’s new?

Nothing much. Life as usual!

Aur sunao?

Bus yaar, kat rahi hai life!

Long time, no see!

All the above phrases hold distinct meanings which one deciphers after going through a zillion of these conversations. How is life means I really don’t care too much about your life so please keep it short in describing it.

Good is a word which we use pretty wastefully in describing everything from food to people to cell phones to everything under the sky. So if somebody says good, it means that he or she is not that interested in telling you the details of his life or may be there is nothing to tell.

What’s new is a term which we have graciously copied from the Hollywood flicks(nobody used to ask what’s new 10 years before) much like what’s up which is its synonym. It generally means please tell me you have done something interesting with your life and have been able to shed that pathetic existence of yours.  And if somebody answers life as usual you might as well say adios and leave because trust me the conversation would not move forward.

Aur sunao usually denotes boredom or tiredness. Aur sunao matlab I’m not going to say anything more because I’m too tired and too bored to ask you questions which exceeds more than two words, so please you say something. Bus yaar, kat rahi hai zindagi means you know how boring I am, why are you humiliating me to describe my life?

Long time no see means oh god, you again; I thought I had seen the end of you for good.

I’m sure many of you disagree with my interpretations and may have some of your own so please feel free to post them.

PS:  for those who might know me, will now be afraid to have a conversation with me. In all seriousness the above piece was an impotent mix of my unimaginative writing skills and weird sense of humor. So all those who had to go through it, I extend my sincere apologies.
