Only 56 kbps External !!
Apr 29, 2001 10:54 PM 4900 Views

Hi. I have had a PC for 5 years now, changing from 33 kbps modems to 56 kbps modem and now to an Internal modem. I can't explain why I keep changing my modems, It's a secret.

But what I can tell you from all these years is that DON'T EVER BUY AN INTERNAL MODEM. People told me that several times but I ventured out and now am repenting. External modems have the following advantages:-

You can see the modem lights and slowly learn to understand what they mean. U know when u r connected, disconnected and plenty more. U may think what the hell? Even windows shows me that. But what when it crashes? or hangs one app?(happens pretty often) U don't know the status of your connection.

Then again, you have easy access to the modem switch. Can reset it if required. In internal modem you would have to restart the PC.

Also internal modems freeze your PC for a few seconds while dialing. pretty frustating.

Finally, Internal modems are sometimes not detected by LINUX.(don't underestimate it. It may be the only thing for  Intel platforms after Windows goes down for good).

So I hope u learn from my mistake and buy an external modem.

Now with 56 kbps access available to one and all in India, I guess that should be your choice.(Only Netcracker still gives 33 kbps access).

SVD or voice capability is your choice. Useless in India since most tones are undetectable by American Software. and we don't have advanced features in our phone lines as yet!

Can use it as an answering machine, only if it works!

Other wise I recommend 56 kbps External modem no SVD for the home user.
