I was in quite a hurry now but I just coulnt stop myself today from writing a review on a film that was a path breaking effort, well balanced between an off beat narration and conventional elements and makes for a true thriller.
when I saw its promos with emraan hashmi playing guitar and a new girl adoring him from afar, I thought it was just another soft porn flick. and when I saw vishesh films, I was damn sure about myself. but how wrong can one go !
fantastically shot with some dark frames and bluish lenses, gangster reminds one of a sanjay gupta flick. later on, one realises that the script is very taut and holds you. the character of daya intrigues even though he does not speak much [ thanks to a stellar performance from shiney ahuja ]. the female lead character's frustration is well very explained and so is her dilemma to choose from the two men she loves dearly.
but the real story unfolds when we get to know about emraan's character's viciousness. that was not at all expected and a true suspense element. for the first time, emraan hashmi performs excellently and even manages to steal some scenes from the lead pair. kangana as simran shows great talent as an actress. she has a raw touch to her personality unlike any other newcomers which fortunately added to the character's emotions in the film and her great performance.
some moments to remember when daya goes to khan, [gulshan grower] his mentor, to beg for his life and then he sees a singer crooning "ya ali madad ali". fantastic lyricism. even the scene when simran goes to akash and realises that she has been used and betrayed is brilliant written and equally well executed.
but the film scores mainly because it moves on a fascinating path and turns out to be even more unpredictable in the second half than the audience can expect. the moral of the lesson that dont trust anyone implicitly is well entertainingly exuded on the celuloid. thumbs up !
