Pretentious but full of potential

There are some great writers, some good writers, some average writers, some bad writers, some poor writers, and some pretentious writers.

I will concentrate on some of the most pretentious writers on MouthShut. In this sense, they make my list of the worst writers, otherwise there is nothing like Worst Writers.

karana23: His content is rock solid and his thought process amazing for an 18-year old. But that’s it, his reviews are nothing but ‘samples’ written by an 18-year old who is desperately trying to flaunt his knowledge of the Queen’s English. In fact, this is the plight of most of our journalism. Dear Karan, using high-flown words is not the key to great writing, clarity of expression is. Communication is the root of all writing. If you do not communicate with your target audience, then pray, tell me what is the purpose of all those great sounding words.  I hope you do not mind criticism. In your reviews, I find a boy who’s desperately looking for attention. And the best part is that you are getting it. Get down to the basics – plain and simple prose that’s easy to understand.

nikamma1112:  Humour is a good thing. But it shouldn’t be used so liberally that its usage becomes monotonous. All of nikamma112’s reviews are humorous, in much the same way. He begins by using an analogy and keeps on going in circles and by the time the main review begins you are through half the page. But he’s still not done and thus you have to go to the Comments section to read the rest of the review. That’s not done my dear friend. Write your review in whatever space is given to you. And yes, humour us, but not so much that your main message gets diluted.

koshish: She actually speaks while writing. Nothing wrong with it. In fact, making the written sentence ‘spoken’ is an art by itself. Not too many are blessed by this. Koshish could have made this her strongest point. But she writes grammatically incorrect sentences. She is a good talent but needs to be more focused.

vivekbp: Karan’s problem is his problem. Till not too long ago he was the Star Writer on MouthShut. Just as I read the reviews of other Star Writers, I went and read almost 20 of his reviews. Phew! I cannot understand half the things that he writes. Maybe the problem is with me – I admit that I am dim witted but the world compromises 99% readers like me. Clarity isn’t one of vivek’s biggest features. Also, I have noticed a ‘I’m so great’ attitude in his writing.

life1oxygen: He is ailed by nikammaitis. Humour for the sake of humour doesn’t always work. It could entertain you and provide a few guffaws on a quiet morning, but it doesn’t always serve the purpose. This is our friend’s problem. In a bid to be funny he makes a mockery of things

I could have stirred a hornet’s nest with this review. I assure everyone that taking names was not the purpose here. I went through this exercise with the idea of offering constructive criticism. These writers whom I have just mentioned have a great deal of potential but at the moment they are too self-absorbed. The minute they get out of their self-created mind block, they would certainly become great writers. Right now they are people who at best, write interesting reviews in a bad way. Nothing more nothing less.
