Good Movies Don’t Run!

Exams Over! Oh what a relief! And a part of my celebration for the beginning of holidays, here is my review on the films that I thought deserved to be hits, but couldn’t be. Please note, choices may vary from people to people, and also, these are the movies which I thought about while writing the review; hence there might be many other movies which may have been in this list! So here goes!

Dil Se…

I have never understood as to why many people hated this movie. I for one loved it and still consider it one of Mani Ratnam’s best. A man’s obsession with love with a terrorist who herself is more obsessed with her mission was brilliantly displayed on screen. Add to that some amazing performances by the lead characters especially Manisha Koirala and Shahrukh Khan, a masterpiece music, and splendid photography took the movie to a different level. Agreed, the movie was slow, and the ending didn’t go down with many people, but do all movies need to end with the same result? This was definitely a movie which should have run.

Khamoshi – The Musical

Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s first movie still remains his best movie ever. The story of pain and suffering by a deaf and dumb couple was superbly shown on screen. From the very first frame to the last frame, the film is a tragedy and probably the film didn’t work. Also, the very image of Nana Patekar being a mute person didn’t jell with people as well. However, the film had some excellent music, and easily one of Manisha Koirala’s best acting performance! One can read a detailed review on the movie in one of my reviews list, titled ‘The sound of silence’.

1942 A Love Story

Another Manisha Koirala movie which went down the drain for apparently no reasons at all. A love story set in the British era between a freedom fighter’s daughter and a rich, but patriotic hero was a treat to watch. The movie was superbly directed, and several sequences like Jackie Shroff’sentry, the final scenes were superbly directed. The movie also contained what I consider R.D.Burman’s best music to date – Every single song in the movie is a gem in itself, and it should have been more than any reason for the movie to run. Again, who knows the public, for it does not itself know as to what it wants!!!!

Mera Naam Joker

Some would say this would be a most stupid choice of a movie. But I loved this movie, and think that this was one of Raj Kapoor’s best movie. Agreed, the movie got on your nerves at nearly 4 hours, but what a movie it was. The movie transcends a life of circus joker in flashback, and takes you through 3 different forms of women he visits in his life. Superbly directed, this movie also had some memorable songs as well. Raj Kapoor gave the soul to the movie, however, it didn’t run at all. Some people do have agreed with me that this is one masterpiece of a film, but as usual, good movies don’t run!!

Lamhe

And this movie is yet another proof that good movies indeed don’t run. This movie about a man’s obsession with a woman older than him, and then in turn the woman’s daughter’s obsession of him was the most unusual brilliant story I ever saw – be it Bollywood or Hollywood. Anil Kapoor as the young man yearning for love, and then avoiding it at a later life gave an amazing performance. The movie had the classy Yash Chopra touch all over it, and probably it is his best movie as well. The movie had some superb tunes to go in, as well as some excellent humor provided by Anupam Kher! This also happens to be the first review I wrote on MS, so any one wanting a detailed review, read my very first review!

Ah! As I end this review, one more movie which I think should have worked big time - Andaz Apna Apna

Well folks, those were the movies I thought should have worked, but didn’t. Everyone’s choices may vary and I don’t expect my choices to match with others, however it’s a nice topic to write on! If you haven’t seen these movies, rent them immediately!

Happy viewing!
