Great Movies

I have always been an admirer of Aamir Khan, for his superb acting. Every performance of his has been different starting from Dil Hai Ki Maanta Nahin to Dil Chahta Hai. There have been many forgettable flicks of his too. But the great thing with Aamir he lends great depth to every character he portrays, so that it doesn’t become a cardboard cut. Even in rank mediocre movies like Raja Hindustani, Mela, Mann and Ishq, he managed to stand out. While there have been many good movies of Aamir, I have mentioned the following 5 just because of the brilliant characterization.

1) Raghu in Dil Hai Ki Maanta Nahin: After a slew of mediocre movies, Aamir roared back with this remake of “It Happened One Night”.(it was not the first though, Raj Kapoor and Dev Anand had already done the same in Chori Chori and Nau Do Gyaarah). As a happy go lucky journalist Raghu, Aamir was brilliant. His casual manner and brilliant comic timing were outstanding. Watch the way, he informs Pooja Bhatt that she has lost her luggage and you can see what an excellent actor he is. I was not much of an Aamir fan till then, but this movie converted me into one.

2) Sanju Lal in Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander: Great movie, and one of Aamir’s best. Aamir was the life of this movie. As a carefree irresponsible youngster, as an unscruplous guy trying to impress a rich girl and as the person who has to take over the family due to his brother’s accident, Aamir bought different shades to his role. Whether it was trying to impress the rich girl(Pooja Bedi), or feeling guilty over his brother’s accident, or fighting it out with the snooty rich guys, Aamir was superb. And the cycle race was really nerve tingling. Superb movie.

3) Munna in Rangeela: Though the movie was ostensibly Urmila centric, Aamir refused to be overshadowed, and once again came up with a trumps performance. The scene in the hotel, where he tries to impress Urmila wearing a canary yellow shirt and his tapori performance in the hotel were simply brilliant. Aamir proved that you don’t have to indulge in wild facial expressions or crude gestures to make people laugh. It’s a pity that he missed out the award for such a superb performance.

4) Rohit in Akele Hum Akele Tum: This was the case of an excellent performance getting unnoticed due to the movie being a failure. The movie though a remake of Kramer vs Kramer was well directed by Mansoor Khan and sensitively handled. Aamir was once again brilliant in the movie. This movie proved that Aamir could do more than just play romantic lover. At a time when the heroes in Bollywood were content with running around the trees, Aamir took up a challenging role of a divorced father. And did full justice to the role. The climax where he breaks down sending his soon, had many in the audiences in tears.

5) ACP Amar Singh Rathod in Sarfarosh: Another great movie and another great performance. Aamir proved that to play an action hero you need not be a bicep bulging dude, and shout “Kutte Kamine”. It was one of the most intelligent acting ever seen in Indian movies. This was not the typical Bollywood cop who romances the commisioners daughter and thrashes a 100 goons, but some one who uses his intelligence. Not the one man army, but a guy who believes in team work. Sarfarosh was certainly one of the best cop movies in Bollywood

I have not included Lagaan since it has been written to death in almost every magazine, and felt no point in taking it up again. Great movie though, and Bhuvan’s character is again excellent. Along with the totally different character of Akash, the flirty rogue in Dil Chahta Hai, Aamir is India’s answer to Tom Hanks. I would love to see him in a Forrest Gump type of role. I am eagerly awaiting the Arising.
