Man:-''A carnal beast living in a cosmos which is permeated and motivated by the Dark Force which we call , Satan .Over the course of time man has called this Force by many names .''
Excerpt from Anton Szander La Vey's Satanic Bible
Why do we want to be scared ? Why do we pay money to create a creepy ambience that would scare the crap out of us ? Just an adrenalin rush ? Or is it something more ? Maybe our darker half compels us at times to give in to that Dark Force . However , you are entitled to your own conclusions .But you cannot deny the fact that we like to intentionally frighten ourselves , and the tool we use most commonly for that is the audiovisual media.
Over the years Hollywood has been considered the paradise of horror movies . Before I tell you my favourites , let me confess something . To me , horror movies revolve around ghosts and spirits . So I wouldn't include movies like Alien/s , Psycho , Friday the 13th etc. Although these are great thrillers and I did get horrified when I saw 'em for the first time . Secondly , I simply hate those gross movies with bug-licking and rotten corpses incorporated for no apparent reason .
Enough talk lets move on ...
5)The Others:Set in the backdrop of the World War II , Nicole Kidman plays the wife of a soldier who is on the battlefront , while she lives like a captive in a huge castle on a solitary island , with her son , daughter and a mysterious family who work for her . I dont want to give away anything about this movie in case you haven't seen it .All I could say is DON'T MISS THE ENDING . There's a ''mother of all twists'' towards the end . Great direction , screenplay and acting .
4)What Lies Beneath:If you pay attention you'd see that I have an affinity towards the movies , which dont just try to scare you but some amount of thought have gone into their making . This is one such flick . Harrison Ford and *Michele Pfeiffer * are a married couple who share a lovely relationship . But , suddenly Pfeiffer begins to see and feel things which lead to revelations that rock their lives .Again , a movie with a big twist near the end . This has excellent effects , editing and amazing acting skills befitting the stature of Ford and Pfeiffer.
3)The Haunting : With the exceptional advancements in the field of special effects and technology , horror movies have reached a whole new dimension . This movie featuring Liam Neeson and Catherine Zeta Jones amongst others , is a classic case in point . It starts off in the hackneyed manner where a group of students reach a dilapidated castle with creepy portraits and dusty ballrooms .But as soon as the sequences begin to unfold you'd realise the storyline is totally unique .
2)Omen:This movie and its sequel called Damien:Omen II were the best in the genre that deals with the ''Devil Incarnate'' concept .The elaborate cast in both these movies included a host of hollywood celebrities including the legendary Gregory Peck . The eerie background score gave the movie its haunting ambience . The 3rd and 4th part of this movie were also released , the later featuring Sam Neil .But none of them were successful in creating the magic of Parts 1 and 2 .
1)Exorcist:Hands down the best horror movie I've ever seen . No doubt the film has its dirty moments .But after seeing it you'd feel those were completely necessary to give the movie its due depth . Based on a true incident , in this movie Linda Blair acts as a single parent and as it turns out her daughter is possessed , not by any spirit, but by The Devil itself . The best job done in this movie was by the make-up artist , who did an amazing job at creating a face that was enough to scare you . The ancient latin dialect that the possessed girl used was also quite creepy .
That was it . There are few others which I would just mention in case you want to rent a few cds this weekend .
