Hello and Welcome to yet another episode of ‘ LOL’ where we talk to you about happiness and laughter. Let me introduce you to our host..Mrrrrrr Merriment

MERRIMENT: Bollywood has been trying its hand at comedy movies since ages. There have been times when it has produced quality comedy movies which don’t fail to entertain you years after their’s release. These days, comedy movies are mainly slapstick – movies which surprise you into laughing at their’s silliness. But what has to be understood is that it's all about ENTERTAINMENT.

Today, our guests are going to talk to you about movies which bring some laughter into your lives.

So, without further ado, let me welcome our first guest – Mr Smiles!!!!

SMILES: In this category , there are movies which were not promoted as comedy but which nevertheless made you smile.

Namak Halal - Amitabh Bacchan was at his ‘village buffoon’ best. “ I can walk english, I can talk English …..English is a very funny language” probably one of the funniest scenes I have seen.

Yes Boss - Shahrukh Khan as the ‘yes bossing’ subordinate trying to hide the ‘affair’ of his boss with Juhi Chawla. His handling of weird situations did make you smile quite a bit.

Our next guest will talk to us about how to convert those teeny smiles to a ..

GRIN : The movies which didn’t really make it to the exalted ‘comedy’ hits. Movies that did make one enjoy a good laugh in quite a few moments. Movies like:

Rafoo Chakkar - Rishi Kapoor and Paintal do a gender transformation to get into an all girls music band. Quite funny at stages.

Biwi O Biwi - Sanjeev Kumar in a double role – a strict retired military general and a conman. Randhir Kapoor as the wanna be husband of the general’s daughter pretends to be in the army. What follows is a hilarious mishmash of misconceptions , what with the conman and the general continuously changing places and Randhir doing goofups galore.

From this past decade, I guess my choice would be Dil Hai ke Maanta Nahin with Aamir Khan, a smartass journalist, getting mixed up with the adventures of a runaway heiress – Pooja Bhatt. This was ‘adapted’ from an English movie ‘ It happened one night’ and was PURE FUN.

And now, to talk about movies that will make you giggle uncontrollably for atleast 3 hours, if not more..

GIGGLE: Difficult to choose a few but my personal favourites are:

Golmaal -Utpal Dutt’s strict and rigid principles force his employee, Amol Palekar, to create a new identity for himself – his own twin!!! It becomes complicated when Palekar falls in love with Dutt’s daughter – his ‘twin identities’ have to stay apart and behave true to character and at the same convince Dutt of atleast making one of them his son in law!!!

Chupke Chupke - Dharam papaji excelled in this comical riot. Can’t make up my mind as to who invoked more laughter – Dharmendra as the college professor acting as a ‘hindi scholarly driver’, Om Prakash as the ‘I love my hindi language’ jijjaji or Amitabh Bacchan, an English Prof, trying his best to teach botany to Jaya Bacchan.

Recent times?? I guess, only Haseena Maan Jaayegi fits this category. Don’t expect too much from this movie and you will actually enjoy Govinda’s acting as the ‘uncle’

And now for our next guest, one that will have you gleefully chuckling at his anecdotes:

CHUCKLE: I believe a good comedy has to have a script which gives you scope for going beyond obvious humour.

Khoobsoorat -Rekha, the bubbly girl whose life revolves around laughter, confronts Dina Pathak as the disciplinarian who refuses to allow laughter into the house. She creates havoc in the ‘no nonsense’ household of her sister’s in laws with situations of fun and joy and teaches the household her own rules of life.

Chameli Ki Shaadi - Anil Kapoor wants to woo the brash and bold Amrita Singh. He goes to Amjad Khan for advice. Love letters, serenades, mushy lines…all brilliantly enacted in a humorous manner by the innocent Kapoor…..enough said??

Recently, there was this movie Andaz Apna Apna which was very amusing. Aamir and Salman Khan are two, err..idiots, who want to marry a heiress. Their pranks against each other, Paresh Rawal’s double role and most of all, Shakti kapoor as ‘ Crime Master Goga’ have you enjoying the 3 hours you spend watching this one.

Our next guest will make you want to howl with laughter…..say a hi to..

HEHEHOHO:I love to laugh and laugh and laugh. Laughter is the best medicine but the following can give you a stomachache with their hilarious dialogues:

Jaane Bhi do yaaron- Naseeruddin Shah and Ravi Baswani , unprofitable photographers, get tangles up in politics, dirty business, scandals and a MURDER. The laughter this film evokes is to be experienced to be believed!!!!

Angoor - inspired from ‘ Comedy of Errors’, this is a ‘laugh a minute’ movie. Sanjeev Kumar and Deven Varma are two pairs of twins – co incidentally, master and servant in both cases. Identities that get mixed up, bewildering confusions – this one makes you double up laughing!!!!

And now Finally, let me introduce you to the our last guest…the guest who doesn’t believe in ‘just laughing’ but going overboard in enjoying oneself …..let’s hear it for the man himself..

GUFFAW: Personally, I believe in rolling in the aisles, in laughing with complete abandon.Laughing is letting go of yourself.

Padosan - Mehmood,a south Indian music teacher who loves his student, Saira banu who loves music. Sunil Dutt, is brilliantly funny as the village simpleton who wants to win over the same beauty but doesn’t know how to sing. Kishore Kumar, magnificient as the ‘nautankiwaala’ who, after repeated attempts to teach Dutt, makes the latter lip sync to his songs. These three literally make you ‘laugh to their dialogues and expressions’. Even the songs make you hoot!!

Hera Pheri - The landlord: Paresh Rawal, hard core marathi. The tenants : simpleton Sunil Shetty and the streetsmart Akshay Kumar.A mix up of telephone numbers and the three get involved with a gangster who has kidnapped the granddaughter of a millionaire. Akshay Kumar gets the ‘brilliant’ idea of pretending to be the kidnappers themselves and well….what with the three having their own quirks, it’s an understatement to call this movie an entertainer!!!!

Hope you all enjoyed this episode and don’t forget…next week, same time same place…. Thank you everyone for staying with us.
