- Lata Mangeshkar [No question the greatest because of talent, domination, versatility, # of hits & longevity] I initially did not like her, but there is no way you can deny the facts. Dominated even when Asha, Shamshad, Suman Kalyapur, etc. were around. Simply the best.
2 & 3 TIE: Asha [Extremely talented, very versatile, longevity, & produced good # of hits] Personally I do not like her voice, but I cannot deny the talent. Alka Yagnik [Talented, longevity(still in progress), produced massive # of hits, pretty much dominated 90's with the likes of Kavita, Anuradha, Sadhna, etc] Extremely sweet and melodious voice that is a joy to listen to.
Anuradha Paudwal [Versatile, Talented, longevity] Excellent singer and managed to get a good number of hits.
Kavita Krishnamurty [Versatile & Talented] Very good singer with lots of talent, but did take a back seat while Alka dominated. Produced some hits songs, but not enough to jump up on the list.
This list is not based on talent alone, but other things like number of hits produced, longevity, & how they dominated during their prime.
There is no way I can put Shreya Ghoshal or Sunidhi Chauhan on this list. They may one day get on this list, but as of right now, NO WAY! You have to prove yourself over time and show that you can consistently deliver before you get mentioned with the greats. You cant make a few years of music and expect to received Greatness status. It's insane!
