The Swinging Sixties... Review on Five Best Bollywood Films of the 1960s

The sixties were a time of great activity in Bollywood.Colour films had just arrived and a lot of lavishness was seen all around.This was the time of the big-budget big-big films.Five films that I remember are:

1.Jewel Thief:The story of a Jewel Thief who thought he'd never be caught.To escape the police,he tries to brainwash Dev Anand into believing that he's the REAL thief.To achieve this he employs an elaborate posse of molls,henchmen and grey matter.Never has a thriller been mounted with such ceremony and yet been so successful.This was truly a magnificent film,if ever there was one.

2.Teesri Manzil:A murder mystery with great music by RD Burman.Also mounted lavishly with a lot of stars.The suspense is great.The film proceeds at an easy pace and the plot reveals gradually.A very generously produced film too.

3.An Evening In Paris:A film based in the city of love,showcasing all its sights.A lot of ambitious work was done in this film in terms of technique,locations and of course costumes.Sharmi-oo-la-la Tagore wore a bikini for the first time with her ja-ja act.The cable car shot is also memorable.

4.Kashmir Ki Kali:Great locations in a paradise called Kashmir and great looking actors.OP Nayyar comes up with beautiful melody.

5.Johny Mera Naam:Evergreen Dev Anand and a divine looking Hema.And of course Padma Khanna with Husn Ke Lakhon Rang.Though somewhat loud,the film had elements of romance,action and suspense.And Hema Malini.You onli needed to take a look at her and you would know good looks came to be invented just for her.A lavish film by all counts.
