The year 2003 was really a combination of hits and flops. I think that the number of flops were even more than the number of hits. There were a lot of poor movies like Boom, Kwahish and Qayamat. Among the Bollywood movies of 2003 some stand with their heads high. I firmly believe that these are accepted by almost all readers.

1) KAL HO NA HO

Genre: Drama

Starring: Shahrukh Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Preity Zinta, Jaya Bachan, Sonali Bendre etc.

Director: Nikhil Advani

One of the very few family movies released in the year. A mix of comedy as well as tragedy. I used doesn't like sentimental movies, but this one really is an exception. With some funny dialogues and scenes as well as excellent performances by all the crew especially Shahrukh Khan, Saif Ali Khan and Preity Zinta, the movie is a must to watch and surely is an experience that will last in our hearts especially the love and sincierity of a man who is waiting for his death. This is Saif's best performance after a long time. The songs too are among the best and all the factors make this movie a masterpiece.

2) MUNNABHAI MBBS

Genre: Comedy

Starring: Sanjay Dutt, Arshad Warsi, Gracy Singh, Jimmy Shergill, Sunil Dutt etc.

Director: Rajkumar Hirani

A great movie about a don with a loving heart, one who has love and compassion for the others. Sanjay Dutt has done a fantastic work here. Gracy Singh has come back strongly with this movie. There is no doubt that this movie has become a super hit as it has all the factors of a family entertainer. The don trying to become a doctor and how he tries to do it are really funny. Sanjay Dutt has once again proved his ability to do comedy roles. I didn't expect this movie to be any good, but it proves its worth just fine.

3) KOI MIL GAYA

Genre: Science fiction

Starring: Hrithik Roshan, Preity Zinta, Rekha, Rakesh Roshan, Johny Lever etc.

Director: Rakesh Roshan

Another movie directed and produced by Rakesh Roshan and Rajesh Roshan giving music after Kaho Naa Pyar Hai. This time it is based on the Hollywood movie ET. As I have seen ET, I didn't find this one very interesting, but it surely is worth a watch especially for small kids. Preity Zinta is part of another blockbuster! She and Hritik Roshan has given excellent performances. Johny Lever too has excelled in the movie. Don't see ET after seeing this!

4) EK AUR EK GYARAH

Genre: Comedy

Starring: Sanjay Dutt, Govinda, Amrita Arora, Nandini Singh, Jackie Shroff etc.

Director: David Dhawan

This is another comic thriller of two thugs Tara (Sanjay Dutt) and Sitara (Govinda) who are keeping on doing small crimes and running away from police. Amrita Arora and Nandini Singh have given some hot and sizzling performances. The movie is really based on comedy and some action accompanied by comedy. Jackie Shroff also makes a come back in this movie as Major Ram Singh. Some comedy may seem to be more than enough, but this movie is really an entertainer.

5) BHOOT

Genre: Horror

Starring: Ajay Devgan, Urmila Matondkar, Nana Patekar, Rekha, Fardeen Khan etc.

Director: Ram Gopal Varma

One of the few hit horrror movies in Bollywood, another one inspired from Hollywood movies, this time from one of the most horrifying movies, The Exorcist. Ajay Devgan has given a nice performance and Urmila Matondkar is outstanding, showing that she is not just a revealing girl just like in Rangeela and Daud. The movie has some good horrifying effects all around the movie. The direction too is worth some applause. The darkness adds to the horror in the movie.
