Happy and Gay!

I haven’t felt so fresh after watching a bolly flick in a long while. Now why fresh you will now by the end of the review.. When I saw the trailer of ‘Dostana’ on 15 August this year during the screening of Bachna ae Haseeno, I knew there is something in store worth waiting for. And trust me I was right. For a change I thoroughly enjoyed the movie without finding any flaws to talk about. Not because I wasn’t looking, but with the simple reason that it looked more than perfect to point at anything.

Now what makes the movie perfect is a good question. We can’t ignore the fact that, just having an IDEA doesn’t sell. Just having a great PLOT doesn’t work. What makes the difference is the way you handle them. And here Dostana takes away the cake. Don’t be surprised if this one is turning out to be a blockbuster.

The movie is all about two guys (Sameer & Kunal) who chose to act gay for their convenience once and then kept falling prey to the situation time  and again. They were okay with the fact till they realised that this lie has stolen their chance to be honest about their love towards the Leading lady of the movie ‘Neha’. Another twist adds on to the movie when the Third Man named Abhimanyu enters in Neha’s life and charms her completely. Now how Sameer and Kunal manage the situation and who gets the gal finally is worth a watch.

Keeping a plot which gives ample ideas to audience, before they enter the cinema theater does half the publicity for itself. Now the only work which was required by our director Tarun Mansukhani (has earlier assisted Karan Johar) is to ensure that the plot is handled in a way that it doesn’t look cheap or grotesque. Trust me it wasn’t an easy task to come up with a story/screenplay which revolves around ‘Homosexuality’ and still keep it within the limits of harmless comedy. I am sure the movie doesn’t offend people of any genre.  Probably the reason of coming up with such a balanced ‘comic flick’ with a touch of emotion is Tarun’s hardwork from scratch.  He is the one who conceived the story wrote the screenplay and even directed the movie. Now, if you feel that the look and feel is ‘same pinch’ to Karan Johars earlier movies, of course !it belongs to Dharma Production and it has to be perfect even without the ‘K’ word. And adding to that the distribution is done by YashRaj Films. The Classes Come together to make a Happy-Gay-Lucky-Cute comedy.

The Casting of the movie must have been well thought. Especially the reason being that the ‘G’ factor was the highlight of the movie, Our ‘Gay Icon’ Abhishek Bachchan would have been pulled in first for sure, and trust me he was at his best ever. Abhishek in the role of Sameer will win your heart with his smile and his act of pretending to be a gay. Followed up by Hottest John Abrahim who has been asked to work on his physique for the movie. He has done the most of the skin show in the movie and was at his best and much better in a comic role than his ‘Garam Masala’ days.  Priyanka’slooks toned than her last release Fashion. In fact  she looks  drop dead gorgeous. Bobby Deol is just as he was, nothing to mention about. Supporting Star cast with not much screen space has done their best i.e. Bomen Irani in a gay Role, Kiron Kher as Sameers Mom, or Sushmita mukherjee as Neha’s aunt. Even Master Shrey has done a good act.

Other things which best compliment the story are the Locales of “Miami”, a location which keeps you drooling to land there right away. Cinematographer Ayananka Bose though his earlier movies except Tashan did not do well. He manages to utilize the locales well and give quite a fresh feel to the movie. Editor Mannan Sagar has done his due diligence well and thus nowhere the movie looks like a shabby patch of work. The film doesn’t loose its pace at any sequence and Mannan indeed needs an applause for it. A must mention is the wardrobe by Manish Malhorta &Aki Narula. All the four stars look stunning and outfits complimenting their looks and enhancing their personality. Not to forget the Swimsuit of Priyanka and John which made them look HOT not CHEAP. The Muffler/Stole used by Abhishek was so cool and Armani suits to Bobby added and edge to the character he was playing.

Music by Vishal-Shekhar was great and was not reminding of any of their previous work. Lyrics were written by Anvita Dutt Guptan, Vishal Dadlani & Kumaar. You will love almost all the songs as they are apt to the situation.  ‘Desi Gal’ , ‘Maa da ladla’ ‘Shut up and Bounce’ are fun to dance on. ‘Jaane kyu’ ‘Khabar Nahi’ and ‘Kuch Kum’ are soft melodies you would love to play on a romantic evening or a long ride. Saleem, Sunidhi, Shaan, Shankar Mahadevan, Shreya and Vishalhas given their voices to the numbers and they don’t kill the mood at all.

Choreography by Farah Khan and Vaibhavi Merchant is notable as well.

There are quite many scenes in the movie which are perfect not-to-miss scenes but worth a mention is one where Sameer and Kunal takes Neha on a date (separately). Ohh Man ! If someone makes my day like that … I can die for them right away. I wonder if Lovers can really do so much for their beloved. I wish to ask ‘Priyanka’  -- while shooting such a romantic scene ‘Kuch kuch huya ya nahi’ - ;)

Now Time for Applauses:

John- for the fabulous work on his body

Abhishek – For the lovely act of ‘Gay’ he is lovable.

Priyanka – for looking so Hot even in sari

Tarun – For a great job all together.

Dostana is a light entertainer which will not disappoint you at all. It’s worth watching and it gives to enough reasons to smile esp on the NON FORCED jokes and some lovely touching scenes and Yeah – Abhishek and John – Great Act! I must say-  You guys indeed saved the grace of the movie by shedding the worries of being framed or termed something. You two have matured as a ACTOR.
