Doctor sleep is a sequel to the shinning(I will be reviewing the shinning later on) which takes place many years later; it follows the character of Danny, who we met in shinning.
As compared to the shinning this is a completely different work, I personally felt that there was no need for the sequel, I was quite perfectly satisfied by what I knew about Danny, his life ended, I really didn't needed the sequel.
This novel picks up the traumatized adult Danny turns out to be, and he followed in his father's footsteps to become equally angrily alcoholic, I can completely understand all this knowing where he is coming from and what his childhood was like.
He spends his life drifting from town to town, never really settling down anywhere or with anyone, until he finally gives up drinking and settle down in a small town of England, where he works in a hospice and his “shinning” allows him to comfort the dying and his ability to be around when people are dying and making their passage into the unknown easy. Which earned him the nickname of doctor sleep .
We also meet a baby name Abra stone, who manifest very powerful shinning early on and we watch her grow up, and develop her shinning. Abra stone establishes a telepathic bond with Danny, and this lead to a start of a relationship between these two. Using her telepathic powers, Abra Stone accidentally witnesses the murder of a young boy, by a group of supernatural beings, who feed on the shinning known as True knot. They are these quasi immortal things that feed on the steam in the people with shinning. The plot goes on from there with these three elements of Danny, Abra Stone and the true knot.
What I didn’t like about this novel was the True Knot element, I was willing to buy shinning, I was even ok with the supernatural elements of the overlook hotel in the shinning but when they finally bring these immortals, it just went to far. If you are new to Stephen king I will not suggest you this book.
