A good effort from Yuvan

Yuvan’s DAAS released last week. This is the second album of him to hit the audio market this month. The director and producer work with him for the first time. After listening to the songs, looks like this movie is a rural based one. The album has six tracks, couple of melodies, couple of dance numbers and one item number. Three lyricists have penned the songs and surprisingly none of them have done a good job.

Sakkapodu – Kay kay, Sathana Sargam – Viveka

A few songs with Yuvan-Kay kay combo in the previous albums were chart busters. They are pathos, but this time they have tried a folk number with Sadhana, who did earler ‘manmadhane’ with Yuvan. Both of them have done a very good job. The song slowly begins like a melody but turns out to a folk number. Nothing extraordinary in the interludes, first interlude filled with a solo chorus and second interlude with a flute. But the tune gels very well with the percussion instruments both in the pallavi and charanams. The beat changes in the charanams are almost like IR-style composition. The only sore point is that lyricist Viveka has given below average stuff otherwise it would have been a very good song. 4/5

Sami Kitte – Hariharan, Shreya Goshal – Pa.Vijay

A beautiful melody by Hariharan and Shreya. The song has shades of ‘mun paniya’ from Nanda. He has changed little bit to the sound of the beat but the timing is same. The violin coming in the interludes and with Hariharan’s vocal part also sound same from that song. But still the song just mesmerises the listener. Lyrics by Pa.Vijay is okay in the pallavi and turns bad in the second charanam. 4.5/5

Shaheeba Shaheeba – Hariharan, Sujatha – Pa. Vijay

This is a short, rhythm based number and has middle-eastern flavour. Hariharan starts the song and finishes it off at the end. Sujatha has sung the charanam and couple of lines before hariharan coming again. The pallavi has this groove beat which is good. The trumpets and flute have been used in the first interlude with good percussion arrangement. 4/5

Nee Enthan – Karthik – Yugabharathi

Another fast-paced melody song from Karthik. I guess this is the first time Yugabharathi has penned a song for Yuvan. He has tried to end each line with the word ‘azhagu’ (like VM did in Suresh menon movie). But this is nowhere near the lyrical content of that song. The tune moves very fast and Karthik has done a good job. Yuvan has used predominantly Spanish guitar (?) in the interludes. 3.5/5

Vaa Vaa – Shankar Mahadeven, Mahalakshmi Iyer – Pa.Vijay.

A dance number sounds like a remix of IR’s ‘adiye manam nillunnai’ from Neengal Kettavai in the charanams. The pallavi doesn’t sound good either. Below average lyrics (Vijay should have banged against the wall to come up with lines like “ammulu kuttiye, bommulu kuttiye”, what was he thinking?) and poor tune make this one an easily forgettable. 1/5

Ennoda Raasi – Venkat Prabhu – Pa.Vijay

A dappankuthuthu number. The way percussion instruments used in this song is good and so is the tune. It has the peppy feeling throughout the song. Enjoyable 3.5/5

Overall a good effort from Yuvan for a mass movie. If he had insisted more on getting good lyrics, atleast sakkapodu and sami kitte would have been classics. But he missed out that opportunity. I hope he requests lyricists to come up with good work in future.

My overall rating: 3.5/5 for the album
